#Minneapolis Autonomous Zine Fest 2024 is coming! Sunday, June 16, 1-5pm at Powderhorn Park, at the north corner of the lake near the baseball fields. Just show up with a table or blankie (you will also benefit from bringing: a lawn chair, suncreen, and water) and the stuff you want to distro. Charge less than $7 per zine. Or if you're coming to take stuff home rather than give it away, just show up!
For questions or accessibility needs, don't ask me because I'm not an organizer, just an enthusiast who saw the poster! Instead email AutonomousZineFest@riseup.net.
“Interim University President Jeff Ettinger sent a message to #students, faculty and staff just after 7 a.m. outlining the agreement.
It includes an opportunity for #protest organizers to address the Board of Regents next week, and a pledge by the university to ‘advocate to the #Minneapolis City Attorney for lenient remedies for those previously arrested in connection’ with protests on campus.” #freepalestine
“A #Minneapolis cop shot my friend Linda Tirado in the face with a rubber bullet, destroying one of her eyes and injuring the frontal lobes of her brain. She's now dying from chronic effects of the brain injury. There is no guaranteed non-lethal way to shoot at someone.” #police
#SaintPaul#Minneapolis#Milwaukee#Chicago - 7 hours 24 minutes - Daily
"Roll past gentle hills and picturesque farmland between the bustling hubs of Chicago and the Twin Cities. Scale Sugar Loaf Bluff in Winona and watch the Mighty Mississippi roll by. Dive into family fun in the Dells and sample culture, curds and a tall cold one in Milwaukee. Borealis Train | Amtrak
아싸 !!
The new Amtrak route from Minneapolis to Chicago is finally here! The trip to Chi-town is not so different from Empire Builder, arriving at 7:15pm vs 4:45pm
But the return arrives in MSP at 6:30pm (not midnight, which my partner vetoed). Big difference!
Also, I didn't take the train last time to a funeral in Chicago because 25% of Empire Builders run 8+ hours late heading east(!) This new train should leave MSP relatively promptly
#Minneapolis peeps: Looking for recommendations for places to eat, mostly for dinner, with vegetarian/vegan options on the menu. St Paul might be ok too - gonna be working long hours at the convention center and seems like a bit of a restaurant desert in that area, but also I will probably not be up for lots of travel every night. Ideally not places that require reservations for Fri, Sat, Mon night, but could get my shit together enough to plan ahead if it's really worth it.
Uber and Lyft have made a living out of busting unions and paying drivers low wages. Now, they are exploiting disabled people in a frantic effort to head off new municipal laws like the one passed by #Minneapolis which would require them to pay drivers a living wage. https://accesspress.org/rideshare-firms-may-leave-metro-on-may-1/
i posted about these two #Minneapolis things a few months ago, so here's an update
the hub bike co-op is re-opening their lake and minnehaha location, starting today! (saturday march 30)
meanwhile, the owner of midwest mountaineering - the indy gear store that closed last fall around the same time as the hub - announced that he's going to turn the building into.... wait for it.... apartments. fuck that guy,
a copaganda article (which doesn't really say much that folks who have been paying attention didn't already know) about the plans for a new #Minneapolis police precinct is on MPR today.
as a reminder, the entire city council, including the DSA members, and including the socialist Robin Wonsley who used to head up a neighborhood "abolitionist" group in the aftermath of 2020, support this new precinct AND support co-locating some form of social service under the same roof. They also all support the idea of a smaller storefront sub-station with a part-time police presence (like the new precinct, they're using the words "community safety center" for this) somewhere on east lake street yet to be announced.
After weeks of record high temps and no snow on the ground for a month, winter returned to #Minnesnowta. May as well bring back some other #Minnesota memories with #HuskerDu#MaryTylerMoore.
Today In Labor History March 27, 1912: Start of the 8-month Northern railway strike in Canada by the IWW. Over 8,000 construction workers, led by the IWW, walked off the job at Northern Railway workcamps Wobblies picketed employment offices in Vancouver, Seattle, San Francisco, Tacoma and Minneapolis in order to block the hiring of scabs.
Fellow workers pay attention to what I'm going to mention,
For it is the fixed intention of the Workers of the World.
And I hope you'll all be ready, true-hearted, brave and steady,
To gather 'round our standard when the red flag is unfurled.
CHORUS:
Where the Fraser River flows, each fellow worker knows,
They have bullied and oppressed us, but still our union grows.
And we're going to find a way, boys, for shorter hours and better pay, boys
And we're going to win the day, boys, where the river Fraser flows.
For these gunny-sack contractors have all been dirty actors,
And they're not our benefactors, each fellow worker knows.
So we've got to stick together in fine or dirty weather,
And we will show no white feather, where the Fraser river flows.
Now the boss the law is stretching, bulls and pimps he's fetching,
And they are a fine collection, as Jesus only knows.
But why their mothers reared them, and why the devil spared them,
Are questions we can't answer, where the Fraser River flows.
(Lyrics by Joe Hill, 1912, to the tune of “Where the River Shannon Flows.”)
Reports that the city of #Minneapolis has posted an #eviction notice of an encampment of #unhoused people at 5th Ave & 24th St S for Wednesday, tomorrow, during a continued #blizzard and sub-freezing temperatures, forecast high of 27°F and low of 14°F, down to 8°F within 24 hours of planned encampment #destruction.
Enough promised documentation and defense may help deter or slow down #Minneapolis' rate of destruction of the only homes #houseless people here have. No #evictions would ever happen if #housing were always provided, but even a week's reprieve makes a big difference in this weather. Please spread the word in #Minnesota#MNastodon and stop Frey's murderous #police led approach to #homelessness
The police did indeed show up in force this morning to force the remarkably compact and tidy encampment a little south of downtown.
As of an hour ago the city's enforcers of poverty – the infamously murderous #Minneapolis#police – were still waiting for their fig leaf—"outreach workers"—to arrive.
Here are pictures, if there are any non-cop faces let me know and i will remove or edit:
That one neatly and carefully put up tent was gone thirty minutes later. This is the #Minneapolis police playbook, not letting #unhoused people have any stability, chasing people away from being able to live anywhere near the encampments that the cruel mayor, Jacob Frey, has his minions destroy again and again and again and again and again and again and again.
An Indigenous elder and her dog need housing for about a week in the face of the incoming bad weather. This is from linda dot black dot elk on instagram. I don't know her personally or live nearby but wanted to share here in case anyone has options they can pass on to her. I can DM any contact info to linda from my instagram account if you don't have an account. https://www.instagram.com/p/C4tcJNmSJ03/ should be a direct link to the post.
