They should do this here. Boosting Brent Toderian (BrentToderian): This is REALLY important.
“In Finland, the number of homeless people has fallen sharply. Those affected receive a small apartment and counselling with no preconditions. 4 out of 5 people affected make their way back into a stable life. And all this is CHEAPER than accepting homelessness.”
Let that sink in. It costs less than accepting homelessness. #Finland#Helsinki#homeless#cities#homes https://scoop.me/housing-first-finland-homelessness/
More specific ask: I've been looking at commercial real-estate around #Atlanta and there are a lot of old abandoned apartment buildings that are ripe for fixing up. Do I know like 10+ people who would want to cooperatively buy one, fix it up, and live in it? It would be a lot of work, but I think we could do it for a lot cheaper than getting a mortgage on a normal condo if we got enough willing hands to pitch in.
@sam Interesting! I'm not sure there's a hard limit on how long you can stay at Kanthaus but I suspect in an association nobody has any right to the assets. In coops you can/should mandate certain economic rights for the members/shareholders (like the right to be paid back your shares when you quit, unless they've been destroyed by losses).

Classic #Helsinki: I bump into a fellow cyclist in the neighbourhood, get invited to pay a quick visit, find out their flatmate is a #NixOS user. You can imagine what happened next.
@legoktm Nice! I would have needed something like this at the #Arabianranta library in #Helsinki. It's in a big former factory and there's a library sign on a corner of the block, but you have to walk all the way to the other corner of the block (about 300 m) to find the very small entrance door (which is unmarked). Finnish urban design is usually great but not always.
Threads is the most fun, most interesting new product of the year, and no one in the E.U. can use it, or will be able to use it anytime soon, because their own elected officials passed a law that effectively bans it.
Kristerssonin toive ei tule hyvään hetkeen toteutumaan, sillä sähköistys etenee pienten, yleisilmailuun sopivien lentokoneiden kautta, ja sellaisilta #Helsinki tuhosi lentokentän. Lähin kenttä on Vantaalla ja sen kapasiteetti menee reittilentojen suuremmille koneille, joiden jättövirtaukset tekevät lähestymiset ja kiitoradat liian turbulenteiksi pienemmälle kalustolle.
For #TravelThursday here's some lovely late Art Nouveau architecture in Helsinki, Finland. This is the stunningly beautiful Helsinki Central Station and it was opened in 1919. It carries a lot of influence from German expressionism in its design. The sculptures are called the #Lyhdynkantajat (or Lantern Bearers).
I was weally impressed by #Helsinki airport 🇫🇮 I don't think I ever saw that massive throughput of people going through security at no time at all. Also, not having to take out your laptop or liquids from your bags 👌 Can we please have that everywhere sometime soon?
In #Helsinki 🇫🇮 preparing for my talk on #OPA tomorrow. Good times with folks from solo.io. Also got to meet my Mastodon buddy @Jeremiah. Genuinely nice person! If you happen to be at #APIDays here tomorrow, my talk is at 11:35. Come by, it’ll be fun!
Speaking of #cycling, I had my first near miss with a #car today 😨
I came down a hill on a road where bikes don't have a dedicated cycling lane, ending up into a roundabout. Seeing the roundabout clear for me to enter I did so. I noticed a car coming up towards the next entry of the roundabout at some speed, but it was clear I would be the first to enter.
Unfortunately the car driver clearly either didn't think that was my right to do so or didn't care or was focused on something else than driving. Just as I was passing the point where they enter the roundabout I realized they were not slowing down, with very little possibilities. The car owner slammed on their breaks quite heavily, thus narrowly avoiding hitting me.
My reaction was to pull over to the side of the roundabout. The car happily just drove away without seemingly a second thought. I proceeded to thank them for not running me over with the international finger (yes, mature, I know, but just getting almost run over I wasn't thinking straight). I do hope the driver realized what had almost happened and it makes them pay more attention to the operation of their metal machine of death in the future.
I've cycled a lot, pretty much all of it in the city. Though in #Helsinki we generally have lots of cycling lanes, you still need to mix with the killing machines at times. I count myself lucky this is my first situation where I think it could have been bad.
Excited to be speaking at APIdays Helsinki June 5 & 6 about more secure, resilient, ecological IoT with Leaf Computing.
Apidays Helsinki is the Nordic edition of hugely popular global #APIdays events. The organizers are expecting 500+ participants and the speaker lineup is impressive with leaders from Nordea, OP Financial Group, VW, Deutsche Telekom, Fintraffic, AWS, and AT&T.
Next week I’m going on a tour! First off #Helsinki 🇫🇮 where I’ll #ChaChaCha myself into #APIDays and talk distributed #authorization and #OPA on Tuesday. Then off to #London 🇬🇧 where I will reveal my latest side project at the #CNCF meetup on Wednesday. If you’re anywhere near, let me know as I’d love to meet up 😃
Very happy to have a little growing box on the university campus this summer! I am somewhat cursing the person who decided to grow peppermint in this box last year - it took me about an hour to get rid of the peppermint, but it was a good way to relax.
Now I've planted a mix of seeds and pre-grown plants and I'm going to see what actually grows here. Photos of before and after my afternoon of gardening! :blobfoxbox: :blobfoxflower: #Helsinki#CityFarming
I harvested the first radishes from my growing box today! There's definitely room for some improvement, but I'm really happy with my little tasty radishes and I'm having fun figuring out how to grow things :ablobcathappypaws: #Helsinki#CityFarming
