Not ready to fully advertise this, but since the spam wave is picking up again, here's the tool we're using for automated reporting of spam: https://gitlab.wikimedia.org/legoktm/masto-monitor

everything is still human moderated, this is just helping us detect it as soon as it appears on the timeline.

and as always, thanks to the humans who unfortunately see the spam and are reporting it!

yikes, "Section 230 is what protects tech companies..." [from what users post / not taking down things]

No, that's the First Amendment!!

@brion @TheDJ hi, I have a question about how MediaWiki+TimedMediaHandler handles transcodes of deleted and undeleted files

context: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_talk:Picture_of_the_day#Steamboat_Willie

The plan is to undelete the video on Commons and then immediately put it on the enwp Main Page. Is that a bad idea if the transcodes haven't finished yet? Will transcodes from before it was deleted still work or do they need to be generated again?

Introducing Wikifunctions: first Wikimedia project to launch in a decade creates new forms of knowledge

https://wikimediafoundation.org/news/2023/12/05/introducing-wikifunctions-first-wikimedia-project-to-launch-in-a-decade-creates-new-forms-of-knowledge/

legoktm,
@legoktm@wikis.world avatar

@angdraug @wikifunctions the people who are working on Wikifunctions aren't in charge of the Wikimedia Foundation's social media strategy, but they are all active on the Fediverse so I think you're directing your ire at the wrong people

(but yes, it's sad how the WMF as an org isn't promoting the Fediverse more)

legoktm,
@legoktm@wikis.world avatar

@angdraug @wikifunctions you're preaching to the choir here, but I see it in bad taste and the opposite tone of a welcoming Fediverse to complain about social media icons on a post celebrating the launch of Wikifunctions...YMMV; good luck I suppose

legoktm,
@legoktm@wikis.world avatar

@boud @angdraug @wikifunctions I do, but I think it's pretty inappropriate to just start @'ing them about this given that they're the ones doing the right thing

(I don't plan to engage further in this thread)

New blog post: "Support my work, please"

https://blog.legoktm.com/2023/11/27/support-my-work-please.html

I am privileged to work full-time on FOSS at the Freedom of the Press Foundation, and as a result, get to spend my free time contributing to wikis, running a Mastodon server and riding bikes.

FPF is doing its annual year-end fundraising drive and if you like my work and have the means to do so, I'd ask that you make a donation. (My blog post also has instructions on what to do if you hate my work.)

Thanks!

I haven't been very good with posting/writing about what I'm working on, so here's a 1,200+ word post about how we replaced[1] the GPG code backed by a library aptly called "pretty-bad-protocol" with a Rust library named after trees, Sequoia-OpenPGP.

This is the first written-here Rust code that will be shipped by SecureDrop \o/

https://securedrop.org/news/migrating-securedrops-pgp-backend-from-gnupg-to-sequoia/

[1] okay technically we didn't replace p-b-p entirely, but largely sidelined it

@legoktm The last update to the Rust toolforge crate lost the ability to use DB pools for tools-db? Or did I miss the documentation for this?

legoktm,
@legoktm@wikis.world avatar

@magnusmanske it's only on the "main" branch right now, but I'm planning to do a release in a few days with it properly, sorry about the delay!

"Google Sites" now supports embedding images.

What you want: <img style="margin: 0 auto;">

What you get:

  • ~100 HTML elements, including 57 unique CSS class names across 83 attributes, 30 hidden DIVs, 3 iframes, 2 external script tags, 2 inline script tags, and 1 actual <img> tag.
  • the <img> is inside an iframe, nested 3 (!) levels of iframes deep.
  • an image cut off in both X and Y directions.
  • not one, but two unwanted scrollbars.

legoktm,
@legoktm@wikis.world avatar

@krinkle are the iframes plausibly for security/isolation or just clearly something silly?
