"Extreme droughts in the Western Pacific region are expected to persist over the next three months. Parts of the #MarshallIslands, #Guam, #Palau, #MarianaIslands, and the Federated States of #Micronesia (#FSM) are now designated under extreme and exceptional drought. These conditions are causing a massive strain on agriculture, water supply, and daily life.."
Interesting feature on #Guam and other U.S. quasicolonies in the Pacific. But I wish it had explored issues other than U.S. military bases. I spent two months in the FSM as a student. Use of the dollar as the currency encouraged imports to the neglect of the local economy: everyone ate spam rather than going out to fish. There was serious illegal (over)fishing by the Philippines and, probably now, China. Cultural losses from Japanese occupation were still highly visible. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/07/magazine/guam-american-military.html?smid=nytcore-android-share
