There seems to be somewhat of a theme to this week's #FOIFriday.

It might not be surprising, a lot of these are classic #FOI requests...

A lot of councils run museums and galleries, and after the missing British Museum items, it may be worth asking if they have any losses of their own.

Two Victoria Cross medals are among several items missing from museums across Essex, according to #FOI

The power of #FOI requests is you can ask for whatever information you want (you might not always get it).

The first two stories this week feature FOI used for follow-ups - to official data or to another FOI...

Getting an answer - any answer - to your #FOI isn't always easy. And it might be getting harder.

Figures for both Scotland and the rest of the UK suggest few get everything they ask for.

So which stories saw success with their FOI request this week...

You sent off an #FOI request. And you've got an answer!

But then when you come to write the story, suddenly the public body is disputing what it sent you

This happens depressingly often with FOI...

anxiousmac,

@clairemiller That seems to be a remarkably high figure. Looking at https://www.nrscotland.gov.uk/statistics-and-data/statistics/statistics-by-theme/vital-events/general-publications/quarterly-births-deaths-and-other-vital-events/3rd-quarter-2023 there were just under 15000 deaths in Q3, a similar figure Q2 and 18500 in Q1. Q4 average is a little under 15500. So a total of 64000 deaths approx - were ambulances actually called for the 12000? If so it does seem to be a remarkable figure.

New instance, new #introduction. Hello #fosstodon!

I'm Robbie, and like my bio states, I'm a freshly hatched #linux user and #retrogaming enthusiast. Also an avid proponent of #foi, #foss, #digitalrights, #humanrights, and political / #socialjustice.

The theme of this week's #FOIFriday is the use of #FOI to reveal poor and/or illegal behaviour.

FOI can be a really powerful tool for bringing things to light (particularly the extent of them).

All 22 ministries refused to answer a request for basic data about how #FOI is working in #Alberta.

At first the province claimed there were no records – a questionable assertion, given every other jurisdiction had provided records. #DanielleSmith at the time said Alberta aimed to remedy the problem

But a second effort... to seek the data was rejected in August. The Globe’s work suggests Alberta is violating its own law
