"...What if, instead, the electricity goes out for several days during a blistering summer heat wave in a city that depends on air-conditioning in those months?... n Dr. Chester’s scenario, a compounding crisis of extreme heat and a power failure in a major city like Houston could lead to a series of cascading failures, exposing vulnerabilities in the region’s infrastructure that are difficult to foresee and could result in thousands, or even tens of thousands, of deaths from heat exposure in a matter of days. "In the eastern states of Bihar and Odisha, 24 people died on Thursday alone, including three election officials and a police officer who collapsed in the midday sun, the Times of India reported, citing state officials. In the desert state of Rajasthan, 55 heat-related deaths have been reported in the last seven days. Within just a two-hour span on Thursday night, 103 patients complaining of heat stroke were admitted to Sadar Hospital in Aurangabad city, surgeon R. B. Shrivastav told The Post by telephone. Five were dead by morning." #heatwave#death#climatedisaster#climateemergency#disaster#india
7/ snip "#Insurance is an easily overlooked but critically important factor to the stability of civilization. As Roger Hallam put it recently: “no insurance, no economy.” All property values in the US are underpinned by disaster insurance. If a property is in a #flood zone, #fire zone, earthquake zone, etc, you must carry the relevant #disaster insurance or you cannot get financing. If your property is deemed too high risk for insurance, no one is going to buy it because they will not be able to get financing. If insurers pull out of an area, the property values will tank, essentially becoming stranded assets. If businesses leave then residents don’t have jobs. It’s yet another example of a fragile system with a clearly defined breaking point that, once passed, will cause tremendous cascading impacts."
"Mexico will surpass historical heat records in the coming days
• UNAM scientists consider that it is an unprecedented condition and suggest that society reduce exposure to the sun, wear light colors, use sunscreen and constantly hydrate, among other measures.
• 2024 is very likely to be the warmest year on record...
In the next 10 or 15 days, the country will experience the highest temperatures recorded in history ..."
I've just watched the Plainly Difficult video on the 1985 Bradford City Valley Parade fire.
I'd been at that ground about a week prior for something unrelated to football. I wasn't at the match on the day but could see the fire from the distance. The memory still upsets me almost 40 years later.
The ironic thing was that the match was the last of the season and the stadium was due to be demolished the next week
