Listening to Billy Joel's “52nd Street“ album and suddenly wonder... “what's this Steely Dan track doing here, am I on some weird shuffle? Doesn't really sound like Fagen vocals though…”
Turns out I was listening to track 4, “Zanzibar” - clearly inspired by the west coast dudes 🎹
This week for @Kitty's Tune Tuesday @derthomas gave us a theme of "The Opener." We remember the first acts / songs we saw live.
Apart from kid's stuff, like Sesame Street Live, the first concert I went to was in 1994 for Billy Joel's River of Dreams tour. My parent's took me and all of my siblings (at the time).
Billy Joel (1977): Releases the song Vienna on his major album "The Stranger."
Billy Joel (2024): Hey, let's make a music video for that song I released 47 years ago.
Billy Joel just released his new single's (Turn The Lights Back On) music video... and it's filled with Generative AI deepfakes of him at various ages. But it's freaking spooky good, I wasn't really sure if it was GenAI or well-costumed/made-up actors until I looked at the credits.

BILLY JOEL Reveals How He Brilliantly Snuck Into A JIMI HENDRIX Concert As A Teenager - "I Just Bullsh!tted My Way In"; Video
Billy Joel dropped a music video for his new song "Turn the Lights Back On" and it's wild.
He uses generative AI to make it appear that he is performing this song at various times in his life while sitting at the same piano. I know AI usage for art is controversial, and for good reason, but in this case, everyone involved (i.e. just Billy Joel) gave consent for their likeness to be used to generate a piece of art showcasing Joel throughout his career playing the same song.
It's fascinating to watch with this haunting song.
#BillyJoel fans have their first new song in 17 years – but why now?
Joel has now been creatively dormant longer than he was actively recording new albums.
“Does ‘Turn the Lights Back On’ hint at what comes next? Is this Joel ready to share new music with the world again? Or is it a wistful plea from a baby boomer artist to be remembered as his star dims?”
By a scholar who explores the legacy of musicians:
Billy Joel's drummer is interviewed on YouTube (Drumeo).
Liberty DeVitto is the guy who played on all of Joel's classic hit songs.
You can see him play during this interview. He's 73 years old now.
What a powerhouse.
Headphones on!
His opening comment, "Listen to everything. Don't just listen to the music you love."
