Opponents say the #Arizona ballot measure will do nothing to improve #border#security or prevent #asylum seekers from arriving. Instead, they say, it will replicate the paranoia & turmoil that #Latino & #immigrant communities experienced after Gov #JanBrewer signed #SB1070, a divisive state #immigration-enforcement #law passed by #Republicans in 2010 that came to be known as the “show me your papers law.” That law sparked years of protests & litigation, & has since been partially struck down.
A multinational operation by Interpol and the FBI cracked down on attempts in Moldova to sabotage one of the international police agency's key tools, the Red Notice system, officials said Tuesday. Four people were detained in the eastern European country.
"The Biden administration is planning to refer some migrants in Latin America for resettlement in Greece and Italy as part of another effort to discourage people in the region from traveling to the U.S.-Mexico border, two people familiar with the government's plans told CBS News."
The network reports: "To blunt a potential spike in migration, President Biden is also preparing to issue an executive action as soon as next week that would bar most asylum claims when illegal crossings soar."
There's a certain type of Westerner who loves Japanese culture, and who believes that the prevalence or existence of yuri manga and anime means that conditions for queer women in Japan are good, or possibly even better than they are in North America. They should really read this: https://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/15271758

The newly agreed #Dutch coalition government on Thursday plans the "strictest-ever" #asylum policy, including an opt-out from European Union rules. After six months in the making, the 26-page coalition agreement proposes to “deport people without a valid residence permit as much as possible, even forcibly”. Monte Francis reports. #Netherlands#EU#immigration#FarRight
"For all the attention on the border, the root causes of migration and the most promising solutions to the U.S.’s broken immigration system are often overlooked."
Major immigration news today: A new asylum rule proposed by the Biden admin could be published as soon Thursday and would allow immigration officials to bar migrants from asylum within days — if not hours — of them crossing the border. @axios#asylum#immigration@immigration
Apparently a forced relocation of #asylum seekers currently happening at brand street, #glasgow - details are unclear. 30-ish people there as well as police. I'm not there in person but will update if I get any info
"The insistence that #refugees might be left to drown is the kind of thing that used to be confined to the meeting rooms of dodgy pubs & white supremacist marches where the police always outnumbered the protesters."
They're truly the pits. A cynical, cruel, pitiless party who will happily drag desperate people into detention and then force them out of the country (at great expense, for those concerned about such things) for nothing more than political advantage.
@glynmoody So a #refugee gets to NI, crosses the border to Eire, and applies for #asylum. Eire wants to push them back, but UK will send the refugee to Rwanda, which isn't safe. So now the refugee has a cast-iron case for claiming asylum in Eire.
This might decrease asylum claims in the UK, but it will do nothing to #stopTheBoats.
According to the latest news, Britain’s plans to send some asylum-seekers to Rwanda were swiftly condemned by international humanitarian organizations.
"The British parliament passed a law late Monday that will mean asylum seekers arriving on British shores without prior permission can be sent to Rwanda and forbidden from ever returning to the U.K. The British government says the law will act as deterrent to anyone trying to enter the U.K. 'illegally.'"
'It has resulted in mass displacement, #violence and potential #genocide, jeopardising millions of lives. While the United States (US) and other European nations have publicly expressed concern at the United Nations Security Council, Britain’s silence speaks volumes.'
