The #Quebec govt could easily free up $3.75M to sweeten the deal with striking workers by simply rolling back their absurd 30% raise they gave themselves (on a base salary that already exceeded $100k/year).
Again: it’s hard to emphasize enough how irregular and shady it is for a sitting legislature to grant itself a raise that immediately takes effect.
It’s just not something that happens in real democracies.
As #Quebec parents scramble to figure out what to do with the teacher strike next week I will point out, yet again, that the #CAQ not only cut taxes to the middle class this year, but also gave themselves 30% raises in the National Assembly.
They could have paid for these raises. They just don’t want to.
(The racial and gender makeup of the nursing and teaching workforces might have something to do with that.)
A Montréal restaurant worker says she was forced to quit after her boss told her she can’t wear a mask at work. The restaurant says it doesn't require workers to be mask-free, but the case raises questions about workers' rights and what constitutes a safe work environment.
