Anyone anything good at the moment? I'm still on my PSP kick playing MGS Peace Walker which I think is going to keep me busy for a while. Especially as I'm not great at it 😶.

So happy I picked up a PSP again though. Such a fun console. I maaayyy have also bought Silent Hill Origins. I think that's probably all the games that I definitely want for it, but any suggestions of hidden gems that I should look out for?

@Hundstrasse I am currently playing through Final Fantasy V for the first time, by way of the Pixel Remaster on Switch. I think I'm about a third of the way through and have been thoroughly enjoying it.

Hundstrasse,
@Hundstrasse@retro.pizza avatar

@Toad64 excellent! 😁

@Hundstrasse I have too many games on my backlog that extends over 20 years lol! I've been playing through Resistance Fall of Man on PS3, started that on stream last week and intend to do the whole trilogy. I also want to get through all of Metal Gear Solid, I started MGS 1 on my PSP but I also got the HD Collection on PS3. Interestingly, the timeline starts with MGS 3, and Portable Ops is immediately after. Portable Ops is exclusive to PSP and never got a remaster iirc.

Hundstrasse,
@Hundstrasse@retro.pizza avatar

@ch1pset yeah, I don't think it ever made it off the PSP 🤔

eeep! I know what you mean! Backlogs get super long when you start going back through console generations!

trixter,
@trixter@retro.pizza avatar

@Hundstrasse You could join me in being awful at Yggdra Union! I picked it up for GBA but I should really get the PSP version since it added voice clips. The recent Switch port seems to have cooled the collector's market for it, but the PSP version's always been a lot cheaper than the GBA one anyway.

I treated myself to a PSP last year and immediately just didn't have time to play much on it. Someday I will finish Final Fantasy Tactics. 😭

Hundstrasse,
@Hundstrasse@retro.pizza avatar

@trixter just had to search for it and one of the first things I read was "...best suited for the hardcore strategy/RPG crowd..."

I may have to sit this one out! 😅

trixter,
@trixter@retro.pizza avatar

@Hundstrasse Yeah, it's pretty aggressive. 😂 The Switch version apparently has a less brutal mode.

@Hundstrasse I'm playing Jeanne d'Arc right now, it's a very fun tactical RPG.

Hundstrasse,
@Hundstrasse@retro.pizza avatar

@maxalmonte14 I keep seeing it on PSP lists of good games. It's really not the thing I'd normally go for but it does look interesting!

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

@Hundstrasse it's not the kind of game I'd usually pick up but it really got me hooked, I'm already 40+ hours in and I don't even know when it happened.

The gameplay is whatever, your basic move-in-a-grid-and-attack type, but the animated cutscenes and story are top tier 💯.

Hundstrasse,
@Hundstrasse@retro.pizza avatar

@maxalmonte14 that's it! I'm sold! 😁. Someone else says "it's not my thing but.... " And I'm gonna have to check it out. Adds it to list of games to look out for

@Hundstrasse

There are so many hidden gems and great ports for PSP 🤩
The Monster Hunter games or early Final Fantasy titles for example 👌

Hundstrasse,
@Hundstrasse@retro.pizza avatar

@repeatro it is a cool system! I picked up the metal gear solid graphic novel for it. And that's just a really novel idea. Kind if a shame that the UMD format didn't gain more traction

Hundstrasse,
@Hundstrasse@retro.pizza avatar

@repeatro I keep spotting the metal slug collection, and I'm tempted. I know nothing about metal slug, but that SNK style is super appealing. PSP definitely has a good number of ports.

(I mean, I'd like the castlevania game for it, but I'm just gonna assume it's crazy expensive!!)

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@Hundstrasse @repeatro oh man, that Castlevania game was amazing. It had Symphony of the Night as a secret. The first and only time I played through SotN. Sadly, I think I don't have my copy of Dracula X anymore. 😢

Hundstrasse,
@Hundstrasse@retro.pizza avatar

@mforester @repeatro I've never played much castlevania, but I think sotn is something I should play

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@Hundstrasse @repeatro I enjoyed it back when I found the secret in Dracula X. I was still a teen and on vacation and I pretty much ran through it in a week or so and did everything. 🤩
I remember that it was hard to put down, but I hadn't played too many Metroidvanias at that point. I think it still holds up, but I haven't played it in a long while.

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@Hundstrasse I've booted up Super Mario World (emulated on my PS Vita) and I'm enjoying it very much. 🙂

Hundstrasse,
@Hundstrasse@retro.pizza avatar

@mforester emulating retro on retro! Retro^2! I wonder how many layers you could do with that?

mforester,
@mforester@rollenspiel.social avatar

@Hundstrasse I could probably go one layer deeper even. Emulating a SNES in the PSP Emulation of the PS Vita. 😁

Hundstrasse,
@Hundstrasse@retro.pizza avatar

@mforester I really would love to see how many layers were possible 😅

Bogusmeatfactory,
@Bogusmeatfactory@dosgame.club avatar

@Hundstrasse the PSP is a system I have almost zero knowledge of and is easily the biggest gap! I really need to pick one up to play!

Right now I'm juggling two games. Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver 2 and the DOS RPG Dark Sun: Wake of the Ravager, both I'm really enjoying for very different reasons.

Hundstrasse,
@Hundstrasse@retro.pizza avatar

@Bogusmeatfactory pretty different, but good variety! I think I've played a little of the first legacy of Kain, but really not much. Maybe I should look into it. What's making it enjoyable?

Bogusmeatfactory,
@Bogusmeatfactory@dosgame.club avatar

@Hundstrasse The dialog and voice acting is top notch. It has a very rich world with a lot of lore that is fun to uncover. It is a big of a tangled mystery but intentionally so and it has been a fun driving force to complete the game and figure it out.

They play very much like a zelda style game, with a heavy emphasis on puzzle solving. Soul reaver 2 is a bit more linear compared to 1 and oddly hasn't had any boss fights, but that hasn't been a detriment honestly.

Hundstrasse,
@Hundstrasse@retro.pizza avatar

@Bogusmeatfactory hmmmm... I'll have to keep a look out for it. Probably start with the first one though

jaykass,
@jaykass@mastodon.online avatar

@Hundstrasse working my way through an Earthbound Zero fan hack which uses a fan translation and makes some other minor improvements. It's called Mother 25th Anniversary.

Hundstrasse,
@Hundstrasse@retro.pizza avatar

@jaykass niiice! It's not a series I know much about, but I understand it's a classic!

jaykass,
@jaykass@mastodon.online avatar

@Hundstrasse I played Earthbound and Mother 3 (fan translation) a long while back. I want to play them again and figured I'd start at the beginning.

jaykass,
@jaykass@mastodon.online avatar

@Hundstrasse it's not perfect but it is better than i expected from a 1989 RPG.

Hundstrasse,
@Hundstrasse@retro.pizza avatar

@jaykass I think there's something special about working through a series in order. Seeing that progression and how it grew over time. Pretty cool
