choyer,

#Reddit users are mad about the #API charges that hit third party #apps, but I actually find this from #Huffman much more concerning: "...data licensing is a new potential business for us."

What he's actually saying - they want to sell user data to AI companies for them to train their models. This should be a reason to delete all your content and leave the platform. In Europe, you should raise a #GDPR-deletion request.

Alternatives are #kbin, #lemmy and #friendica.

chx,

@choyer do not delete your data, reddit restores it. replace it with garbage, rather.

@choyer

huffman wants to cash out with his IPO

you cant delete your content from reddit atm the moment, many believe #reddit is not #GDPR compliant as they offer no deletion

@choyer I also read earlier that Reddit has been restoring posts that were supposed to have been deleted years ago, also in breach of GDPR.

@Gazimoff @choyer

All part and parcel of the "prove it, sue me!" business plan.

Gazimoff,

@mastodonmigration @choyer Ah, the beauty is that the EU doesn't sue. It imposes fines. As Facebook just found out...

@Gazimoff @choyer Yup, but their plan is to pump up revenue, get passed their IPO, cash out, and dump all the legal problems on the poor suckers who buy the stock.

It's the way...

@choyer

Dude, it's not your data.

Oh wait, it is, because the users all agreed to the Terms of Service granting them a license to it.

Oooops.

alfora,

@mastodonmigration @choyer Nice try, but not in the EU. A TOS can never grant something that a law higher above in the hierarchy forbids explicitly. The GDPR is a EU regulation and more or less right beneath human rights.

Yes, you can license the data through the TOS but if the user, the data subject in the GDPR, withdraws the consent, deletes the data, or deletes the account Reddit, the controller, MUST delete the data and cannot use it anymore for anything. (There are exceptions of course but they too must be very specific.)

maxburn,

@mastodonmigration @choyer this is true, there are many reports floating around that people deleting their content see it restored in days.

choyer,

Q:...changes are also a way for Reddit to monetize off the AI companies that are using Reddit data to train their models. Is that still a primary consideration here too, or is this more about making the money back that you’re spending on supporting these third party apps?

A: What they have in common is we’re not going to subsidize other people’s businesses for free. But financially, they’re not related. The API usage is about covering costs and data licensing is a new potential business for us.

bugbear,

@choyer look, I am all for getting money to run servers and compensate staff (in general - have issues with current practices in the industry just like most people here), but this is just stupid from Reddit.

How did they compensate me for creating the content they are trying to sell now? I didn't really get anything out of that deal. Am I getting my share of money from Reddit when they sell it? I can move my "business" to other platforms and stop "subsidising" them.

bugbear,

@choyer the only thing working for Reddit is the size of the community, just like Twitter (or Facebook, or any other social medium). But functionally they are nothing special. Even if we ignore fora that have existed for ages, imageboards (I know, I know), and things like lemmy... I could do engage with communities on mailing lists or USENET.

So what exactly are they bringing to the table that they think people can't find alternatives?

wakame,

@bugbear @choyer
Their oversized ego.
