Bolts are being replaced by Blazers at Chevy but the U.S has definitely made an affordable EV. If you qualify for the rebate, and especially if your state has its own, it’s much cheaper than an Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicle.

That’s just upfront. Then consider that maintenance is roughly 30% less and you’ll typically pay 30-60% less on energy/mile compared to an ICEV. Article from January but still.

@TonyStark I have had an ev for 3.5 years. Maintenance costs: zero

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@tmstreet I’m going to be at 3 years in 2 months. All I’ve spent is state inspection (no emissions obviously) which isn’t bad in my state and on windshield wiper blade replacement.

tmstreet,
@tmstreet@urbanists.social avatar

@TonyStark My previous ev goes back to 2016 with no maintenance other than windshield wipers and tires.

@tmstreet @TonyStark This exchange within an EV vaccum is cool and everything but: availability is biggest keyword. Meaning availability of EVs at dealerships, availability of charging stations (aside from having home set-up installed), and, well, simple geography. (Colder climates are not good for EVs.)

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@FlyVapen_Pikk @tmstreet First, I didn’t say anything about availability or charging stations so I’m not sure why you brought it up. This is strictly a post about affordability. You can read it.

The colder climate thing is a myth.

tmstreet,
@tmstreet@urbanists.social avatar

@TonyStark @FlyVapen_Pikk I have not had a problem with cold climate despite the fact that I live in Estes Park,Colorado. Yes, it impacts battery but is not a big deal. Also, I minimize my driving as our primary ways of getting around are transit, biking, and walking. However, I have been on a few long distance trips with no issues. Regardless, i just don't think it makes sense to buy an ICE.

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@tmstreet @FlyVapen_Pikk There are no significant issues with an EV that also aren’t encountered by an ICEV. ICEVs can obviously die out in cold.

As air density is higher the colder it is, driving in winter increases drag on a vehicle, using up energy more quickly in both. Additionally, cold causes tire pressure to decrease which increases rolling resistance (less problematic with EV regenerative braking.)

Extreme cold can affect both EVs and ICEVs. For some reason, only one gets brought up.

tmstreet,
@tmstreet@urbanists.social avatar

@TonyStark @FlyVapen_Pikk Maybe a minor issue but have never had problems starting EV in cold but I did when I had an ICE.

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@tmstreet @FlyVapen_Pikk Yeah, it’s anecdotal of course but I’ve never had an issue with cold and my EV. I precondition as much as possible and also use public transportation, like you do, as much as possible. I charge while traveling by car and there’s never been a difference in charge speed seasonally.

There is a slight range decrease when the temp is below freezing but that percentage is not going to change in any kind of noticeable ratio with further temperature drops.

FlyVapen_Pikk,
@FlyVapen_Pikk@mastodon.world avatar

@TonyStark @tmstreet Well no... carburetor issue was the culprit for "ICEVs". (I guess we're just making up acronyms now. Must be my clear lack of knowledge to the rest of the world calling their gas cars slurpees?) Ensuring you "warm up" your gas car... is a myth. Assuming your car isn't a collector--aged.

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@FlyVapen_Pikk @tmstreet Kinda some gibberish but whatever.

@TonyStark @tmstreet A myth? Oh ok. There are at least 5 or 6 Tesla owners at my work. One of them spoke of the cold affecting his Tesla to the point of immobility. He has to use his wife's gas car to get to work last December.

Why are you referencing a website instead of your own experience if you're an EV owner? Ohhh... geography, of course my other point that you coincidentally omitted there. No experience due to no colder weather for you.

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@FlyVapen_Pikk @tmstreet 5 or 6 guys at work that you possibly made up isn’t proof.

Nebula,
@Nebula@progressivecafe.social avatar

@FlyVapen_Pikk @TonyStark @tmstreet “5 or 6”? He doesn’t know? Anyway, 5 or 6 guys own a Tesla at work- probably not.

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@Nebula @FlyVapen_Pikk @tmstreet Sometimes I feel bad when people are so blatantly ignorant but I provide links and also don’t post anything I don’t know about.

You don’t see me giving out legal or medical opinions. I stay in my lane. Wish more people on the internet would.

But I’m not debating a person that delusional.

tmstreet,
@tmstreet@urbanists.social avatar

@TonyStark Also, nice to have a car in the garage which is not stinking up the place.

curt_nordgaard,
@curt_nordgaard@mstdn.social avatar

@tmstreet @TonyStark And of course the stink is from toxic air pollutants that infiltrate into the home if you have an attached garage.

Attached garages are consistently identified as a major (if not the major) source of carcinogenic benzene in homes with attached garages. Because of ICEs.

One example:

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@curt_nordgaard @tmstreet Thanks. I’m getting some really useful additions here. Appreciate it.

curt_nordgaard,

@TonyStark @tmstreet Most welcome.
See if this link to the search works for you, you’ll find more references:

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@curt_nordgaard @tmstreet Does, thanks.

evil1,

@tmstreet @TonyStark keep in mind that you still have brake pads and suspension that should be inspected, coolant that needs to flush before it turns acidic, brake fluid that needs to flush.

If they salt the roads definitely service those caliper slide pins before your friction brakes seize!!!

TonyStark, (edited )
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@evil1 @tmstreet Most things like that are going to be mileage dependent.

A regenerative braking system relies of course on brake fluid. Normally, the brake fluid in electric cars should be replaced after running about 25,000 miles. Normally. It’s not time dependent.

The chief ingredient in coolant, ethylene glycol, is quite chemically stable. Antifreeze can quite long-lived in a properly sealed system. Checks are needed in routine but not very often or if you notice a leak. Which you would.

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@evil1 @tmstreet Washing salt off will help prevent the third one but again no difference there from ICEV to EV. Same thing can occur.

@TonyStark Also: if you have an EV plate, you may be able to travel in the HOV lane alone, depending on location.

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@WhiteCatTamer I didn’t know that. Thanks!

@TonyStark I can openly say that if you can find a Bolt, they are very fun cars to drive.

I wouldn't trade my '23 Bolt EUV for anything.

TonyStark,

@tjcasser I have driven one although I own a different 2021 EV. And you’re right.

@TonyStark

I leased an M3 in August, 2021 to bridge until there were more EV models available; I'm happily looking forward to returning it to Tesla this coming August 14th and getting a replacement EV prior to then.
I'd be happy with a Bolt EV or EUV, but my wife wants something comparable to her CRV (now in the possession of our youngest son...).
Based on our initial research, it's looking like we'll end up with a 2023 Ioniq 5.
That said, I'm absolutely open to feedback/input. Budget is ~$40k.

TonyStark,
@TonyStark@progressivecafe.social avatar

@joeinwynnewood I’m not really an expert on the models as a whole or in the car business but I’d look at these 2 pieces.

Texas has a $400 initial registration surcharge, and a $200 renewal surcharge for electric vehicles.

TonyStark,

@Enema_Cowboy Of course they do. Ohio has the same sort of thing. Republicans do what they can to ruin any kind of good thing, no matter what.
