the guy is losing it slowly and wants to make a remake of 1984

@nixCraft Yeah, pass. Privacy is a thing. There are parts of my life I don't even share with the people I love, why in the jolly fuck would I want some asshole company to know it where they will inevitably monetize it?

TheKeymaker,

@nixCraft Yeah what he means is HE wants to know everything about everyone. I'm sure insurance companies wont be his first customers when he starts selling access to it.

@nixCraft maybe... and hear me out here, maybe he should go outside and get some actual friends. You know, like talk to people, except not about AI or funding.

@nixCraft “What if the panopticon wasn’t just a dystopian means of control but also a real fuckhead?”

dpino,

@nixCraft by definition, a colleague that knows absolutely everything cannot be a super colleague, it can only be an asshole

onepict,

@nixCraft Well the first subject should be Sam Himself.

Then it needs to be public. Because let's face it data leaks, so he might as well make it fully public.

The crazy thing about uncontrolled AGI is that at a certain point, when it exceeds human reasoning, whatever trajectory is dialed in at that point is just what's going to happen. There is no rewind back to before it got activated and the humans were in charge. It's a point you only get to reach once, and then once it's been reached, you better hope all the safety and alignment is set up right, because from that point forward, it's going to continue on the trajectory that was set, and it'll just disable any human attempts to control it, if it doesn't want to be adjusted in whatever way.

We're still a ways away from that, obviously. But the research on AI safety has to keep pace with the pace of increasing capability. Again, we only get one shot at it.

The top AI researchers used to seem like they understood that (better than the general perception that existed of what was dangerous about it). OpenAI actually attracted a lot of the top people with the promise of making a top priority out of safety. I don't really know, but it seems like now I don't hear very much about it anymore.

@mozz It seems that some top-level executives have already departed and are keeping quiet about their departure. They were part of coup that attempted to remove Sama as CEO, but their efforts failed. Sama is not someone to be mess with; he is a politician and businessman, first and foremost. Although he doesn't write hardcore code, he is very well-connected. He has even managed to secure a position on a government AI agency that is responsible for regulating AI. LOL.

@nixCraft

Yeah. It bugs me that that whole thing got written down in the zeitgeist as “they tried to play a trick on Brother Sam but the engineers rallied behind him and won the day, and now his enemies have no power, hooray! The end.”

The team at OpenAI was specifically chosen for their qualifications to steer the ship in the direction of safety. Idk; they didn’t do themselves any favors by refusing so completely to explain what Altman had done wrong. So maybe it was all just politicking and all fine how it turned out. But it bugs me that after that one week everyone was happy about it and no one seemed to want to ask any questions.

Grimblob,

@nixCraft I think Sam should get his wish.

A lot of AI is just "people in poor countries in cubicle farms" so he should release all the details of his life and the wisdom of crowds can be competent for him.

denartha,

@nixCraft I am convinced, every individual who is super enthusiastic about the further development of AI has never seen a movie. 2001, Westworld, War Games, The Matrix, I Robot, Moon, Terminator, Terminator 2. Maybe movies arent their thing, but Star Trek TNG, the Borg. Star Trek:Discovery, 'Control', The X-Files had an AI go crazy.

I could go on.
