I really don't think it's fair that my generation

  • had to help our parents use the printer
  • have to help our kids use the printer

@nixCraft Darn tootin'. The weeks and months that I spent with my dad's printers. And last night I went to bed early and heard "mum, the printer's not working! ". I'm afraid I just went ahead and slept. I'm betting 1. it's out of paper 2. they're not connected to the home WiFi 3. maybe, just maybe it's out of toner. Whatever, the 14yo wouldn't be able to get to the bottom of it, for sure. But all A grades at school, don't you know?!? Sub-zero practical skills these days.

@nixCraft

What’s a printer?

horqua,

@nixCraft Never forget: We’re the ones who had to help you blow your nose and wipe your ass.

@nixCraft hard relate

the_q,

@nixCraft there's a lot of Boomer-esque replies here. A lot of blaming kids for being born at the wrong time while championing being born at the right time. It's a pity so few of us have the ability to learn from others mistakes.

@nixCraft Yes it was awful when I had to teach my parents when and when not to answer our Party line. And constantly remind them to raise the mailbox flag to make sure the mailman picked up the outgoing mail. It can be so distressing at times.

colebrodine,

@nixCraft Seriously, does anybody know what happened to make kids not understand technology? I thought we'd be hiring people with a basic understanding of computers by now...

@colebrodine @nixCraft The web is all apps now, no one browses. Google/FB/Amazon/Netflix do everything for you - so you no longer need to know how to do anything. It's sad that younger generations don't get to experience the beauty of the chaotic but user-built web.

sidereal,

@colebrodine @nixCraft I think it was mobile devices/ipads being kinda locked down compared to actual computers. And then everyone assuming "kids are learning about computers organically" so no one was teaching this stuff in schools for awhile. But then parents were buying their kids tablets and phones because that was "the future." But those devices didn't actually have file systems, etc.

So now it feels like millenials are the only "whole generation" of "digital natives." It's weird.
