Blockchain: a slow database

Crypto: an expensive slow database

NFT: an expensive slow database to store URLs

AI: a way to write slow and inefficient algorithms

LLM: a database that stores text in a slow and inefficient way

Chat GPT: an expensive imprecise query language for slow and inefficient text databases that often returns wrong results

I really hope to see some actual cool tech stuff getting some time in the limelight after all the douchebro hype of the last 15 years.

@thomasfuchs My wife was volunteering at Lighthouse for the Blind and one of the other volunteers had a thing he wore on his head that was an interactive wayfinding tool that described everything he saw and read signs. It was mindboggling. (It's gotten better since.)

threatresearch,

@glennf @thomasfuchs that sounds amazing! What was it called?

@threatresearch @thomasfuchs There are so many products we can’t find that one!

Unfortunately..

#SurveillanceCapitalism: An increasingly faster way to throw slow, inefficient technology into society to ensure insane capital flows to the already hyper wealthy and keeps them in power.

dsfgs,

@smallcircles @thomasfuchs
We like the OP because it shows how slowTech can be popular for some circumstances, while highlighting stupidity of NFT. For example we want bitcoin blockchain to progress slowly. That's what gives it strength.

A person can setup Lightning channels between their friends, colleagues, organic growers to do the fast stuff like fast payment, messaging etc. Yes, paired with SATs, Lightning eliminates spam so a proper back and forth convo costs nothing but bandwidth 🙂

ignaziop1977,

@dsfgs @smallcircles @thomasfuchs I want scams like bitcoin to progress slower than that. Like, to a full stop. You do you, as long as you mine with a pedal powered rig.

dsfgs,

@smallcircles @thomasfuchs
So just like the decentralised internet has layers to prevent mass broadcasts from clogging the network. So to does other peer-to-peer, #slowTech.

There's symmetry here.

We should not all jump on the bandwagon that something is bad because securing it is expensive. All good things require some energy to maintain, and the #bitcoin network will require half the energy of existing #banking.

@thomasfuchs is there any reason to expect the market to change, such that "producing a good or service that solves a problem for somebody" will become a valuable and rewarded economic activity?

@rotopenguin no, there is not

thomasfuchs,

@SloanStudio @johnlogic it's almost like they're automata that only process input to an output through a neural network that was formed exclusively by external stimuli without any internal thoughts

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@thomasfuchs Keep an eye out for the sneaky one: "Ledger", the one that means "someone designing a distributed system needed a canonical ordering of events, and they don't want anyone to describe what they made as a 'blockchain' because that would be super embarrassing"

grumpasaurus,
@grumpasaurus@fosstodon.org avatar

@mcc @thomasfuchs you know what where are the likes of kpmg in all this block chain stuff.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@grumpasaurus I don't know what a "kpmg" is. Google turns up only an accounting firm.

grumpasaurus,
@grumpasaurus@fosstodon.org avatar

@mcc yeah like in theory all this ledger stuff implies a "better" implementation of a lot of accounting principles but I haven't heard of any of the major accounting firms stepping in going "yo we know the block chain"

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@grumpasaurus As I am using the word here "ledger" just means a data structure where data is written only by appending it at the end. I don't really see a way to apply this to accounting of any type that could not be done better in some other way. The "blockchain" people claim there is relevance but they (1) lie a lot and (2) stand to financially benefit from increased use of their networks, so I don't think they're useful sources of information here.

mcc,
@mcc@mastodon.social avatar

@grumpasaurus ...but I guess that's basically the point you are trying to make (that it doesn't seem to be useful in practice for accounting/finance)

@thomasfuchs you slow or what? Speed is not the critical factor for human interaction 'with database' :D

javi,

You... You haven't worked much with databases right? Speed is absolutely a key factor in human interaction with databases. People build their own careers around being good at optimizing databases to shave time out of each interaction

thomasfuchs,

Heh, anyone that thinks this isn't troublingly accurate, doesn't actually understand what the tech does.

@thomasfuchs while I understand the sarcasm, I find your take a bit too partial. LLMs may be lossy JPEGs for text, but JPEGs have their uses.

Also, by your logic, mastodon is just a less efficient twitter and the fediverse is the 00's internet but harder to use.

aral,
@aral@mastodon.ar.al avatar

@muzzle @thomasfuchs An LLM isn’t a lossy JPEG for text. A lossy JPEG of a cat doesn’t show you a photo of a horse’s arse. And your other two deductions are non sequiturs.

@thomasfuchs I don't think that it's ChatGPT's results that are wrong, but the person interpreting them.

LLMs do a pretty good job of storing collocation probabilities! If only we could persuade people to see them that way...

rticks,
@rticks@mastodon.social avatar

@libroraptor @thomasfuchs

I am not saying all LLM evangelists are thieves who are OK stealing artists work but I am saying that I dont care to find out 99 times out of 100
