Rogue - 1984
The ancestor of all Rogue-Like.

A game that started well. It may not last!

"Your quest is to fight your way through the Dungeons of Doom and return with the fabled Amulet of Yendor (or die trying)".

https://www.myabandonware.com/game/rogue-4n

Good to know: Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is an adaptation of Rogue. https://mastodon.cloud/@WoodooProd/110293366721864567

AdmiralFrosty,

@WoodooProd oddly enough, I don't think Rogue would be considered a rogue-like today. You don't unlock anything on repeat playthroughs, it's just a difficult, procedurally generated game!

WoodooProd,
@WoodooProd@mastodon.cloud avatar

@AdmiralFrosty

Well. One of the principles of rogue like is permanent death, theoretically. So you don't unlock anything. You start from 0 every time. Let's just say that today's Rogue Like has come a long way. Yes. Which is only to be expected.

Let's not compare Wolfenstein 3D or Doom to today's FPS either. nNevertheless. :0)

Rogue (still)

Save exported & reimported to another machine on DosBox.
Halfway to potentially find the "Amulet of Yandor"?! We all want it! There were some very, very hot moments!

But, huhu.. I totally forgot the name of the scroll after reading it!! Very helpful!! haha
I've made good progress, but I'm afraid I'll miss food.

BlindSeer,

@WoodooProd Another Game I played on Atari 8 Bir. 😁 Every Now and then I fire Up Nethack to Chase The amulet.

WoodooProd,
@WoodooProd@mastodon.cloud avatar

@BlindSeer

Oh yes, NetHack of course, I play it too! :0)
https://www.nethack.org
It's more complete because you can choose your class and race, have a dog or a cat, useful for treasure detection or combat.

I also play the Vulture for NetHack version on . A graphical adaptation in isometric view.

Rogue - Day 2

I progressed 6 dungeons down.. but.

On my way out of the room I come across some really tough mobs. The adventure will probably end soon! :0))

I've got a teleport scroll, so let's see if it's going to come in handy by projecting me elsewhere in the level. (I'm running out of food fast).

@WoodooProd oh man this is SO cool to see the progression!! I hope to have time someday to make some more solid runs.

@jake4480

Hey man ,
I'm a passionate gamer. Like you are, I think. I humbly try to brings memories or an interest to play a game, etc.. Or simply to discuss and share about them.

You're very welcome!
So.. Welcome! :0)
Haha..

Rogue - Day 2

Teleported!

Okay!
Some of you got the "Amulet of Yendor" one day?!

A tip for the next game party would be to hang around in the 1st levels to level up since the mobs respawn randomly. But watch out for the food in this case.

Perseverance.
I want this Amulet!! :0))

Rogue

I need to find this version. It seems more authentic (1980?)

@WoodooProd Rogue and roguelikes are so great. I also like DCSS, like you mentioned- the one on my abandonware you mentioned is cool, there's also some over at DOS games dot com - this one and others like it- https://dosgames.com/game/rogue

WoodooProd,

@jake4480

Thank you for sharing this website. I don't think I necessarily knew him. I'll be sure to dig around for a few wonders! :0)

I Like them too. & RPGs.
DCSS is really cool, for sure!

@WoodooProd yeah I was hoping you'd see those! haha - the first Rogue clone I played as a kid was called Mac Moria, it was on my family's Apple Performa in the 90s and looked similar to all these- it was Tolkien/Lord of the Rings based, you had to go through the dungeon to find the Balrog at the end. Then I discovered it was a clone in my 20s, and have been chasing roguelikes ever since haha. One of, if not my favorite genre. And Rogue DEFINITELY inspired my other favorite game genre, ARPGs (Diablo, etc). People that love roguelikes and dungeon crawlers like us understand. hahaha

@jake4480

I know a few sites with lots of catalogued DOS games, but I didn't know about these at all. Frankly, it's an excellent surprise! Thanks again! :0) I'm still playing on my previous Rogue game. But I'm going to download these dungeons and try them out tomorrow. That's for sure! :0)

WoodooProd,
@WoodooProd@mastodon.cloud avatar

@jake4480

I discovered the genre in the 90's also on Shareware or freeware CD compilations. One thing led to another and I fell in love with RPGs very quickly :0)) I went through Amstrad CPC 6128, then Amiga 600 before my 1st IBM PC compatible.

The release of Baldur Gates was a big slap in the face too!

@WoodooProd @jake4480 If you are looking for more old DOS titles to mess around with, checkout the eXoDOS project. A collection of games, screenshots, manuals etc. Fantastic project! It's a little crazy filesize wise, but contains A LOT.

@dasme @WoodooProd woww this is INSANELY cool, thank you for this, had no idea, had never heard of it! Love the oldschool basic HTML look of the website, too - my kind of thing! hahaha

dasme,
@dasme@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 @WoodooProd it’s such a nostalgia trip. You can click the cd.. at the bottom to see their other projects. None as exhaustive as exoDOS though :)

WoodooProd,
@WoodooProd@mastodon.cloud avatar

@jake4480 @dasme

I like "oldschool basic HTML" too. At that time you would code with notepad. :0))

jake4480,
@jake4480@c.im avatar

@WoodooProd @dasme heck yeah notepad coding! I did a fair share of that. 🤣🤣 I still do it pretty basic.

WoodooProd,
@WoodooProd@mastodon.cloud avatar

@jake4480 @dasme

I think it's possible to make very interesting, attractive, ergonomic sites that load at lightning speed! The old-fashioned way! :0)

@dasme @jake4480

Wow, and huge and incredible project. I loved to read the pdf wich explains how all started! :0)
