Former Reddit user looking for an alternative! I love Creative Writing, games, anime/manga, Android, movies, books, practicing phone photography, and long strolls to nowhere in particular. I'm also on Mastodon talking about day-to-day stuff like my progress in Animal Crossing New Horizons or whatever has caught my fancy!

I'm a card-carrying homosexual if that truly matters duckies!

I'm @WanderingInDigitalWorlds on Mastodon, I joined the @mstdn.games server!

Do people still say “conquer” when they beat a #game?

@leochavez Depends whether the game felt like an upward hill battle or not! I only say conquered for Souls-like games because they tend to be player hostile in nature, it feels like a constant battle between me and the game. I tend to finish these games out of spite. For games with a player friendly nature or normal difficulty, I tend to say finished or completed because I had fun during my playthrough.

@ligniform I find this trend particularly disturbing too! If I bought a game, it shouldn't matter whether I've got an online connection or not. This needs to be made non-normal again because giving ground to any corporation will make them want to push for more. 😬

    WanderingPoltergeist,
    WanderingPoltergeist avatar

@ligniform At this point torrenting or pirating doesn't feel like stealing...Since ownership has become so murky over the years due to corporations attempting to get gamers used to not owning a physical copy.

"In a recent interview, Ubisoft’s subscriptions director Phillipe Tremblay said gamers need to accept not actually owning their games. Tremblay compared this to how people got used to not owning physical CD and DVD collections anymore. He said a similar change in attitude “needs to happen” with gamers as well." Sounds to me like a call to arms more than a convincing argument against game ownership. I might have to get an Xbox Series X and buy physical games again.

    The interview, gamesindustry.biz

I really don't want to enrich a gross company which would argue for people to sink money into subscriptions instead of games! As then games would exist in an ephemeral state which could be removed at any time from the service...It's truly horrifying.

ROFL There quite a few of us who do! I've been having a great cup of Darjeeling tea in the morning with breakfast for quite a while. Admittedly plastic bottled teas are more commonly enjoyed by more people which is certainly the cause of increased microplastic consumption. It's rare to see bottled tea in a glass container (at least in my area of the USA).

Microsoft laying off nearly 2000 people in their #gaming division is something ain't it? But I'm gonna keep my mouth shut on that one.

@mikey By being spineless, profit chasing dirtbags...They laid those people off due to wanting to make their profit margins look better. Even though they could easily cut the salaries of overpaid higher management the mad amounts of cash for their work instead to achieve the same effect. But no, instead like all lay off addicted companies, Microsoft chose the worse option and affecting the lives of so many people just to look good for some damn investors. Capitalism without firm regulations is a huge mistake!

@inspirationgrid This device looks admittedly gorgeous but upon reading about the disappointing battery life for certain games; at the listed price point, I still feel swayed to get the latest Steam Deck (as a lot of my games are Steam Deck Compatible). This is a good effort for creating a unique, fun handheld in a space that sees a sharp increase of new handheld gaming devices! I do commend their effort with the AYANEO Slide.

    WanderingPoltergeist,
    WanderingPoltergeist avatar

@inspirationgrid Exactly, I would love the home console market to get a boost in competition again...The stuff we'd see could be cool! I find the Steam Deck OLED so compelling because it runs a custom Linux Distro and has an easy method to allow developers to make their game compatible with the handheld! It gives me hope that more people will have a good exposure to what Linux could be. Valve certainly made a wise choice with their creation!

    WanderingPoltergeist,
    WanderingPoltergeist avatar

@inspirationgrid This is what I hope for because stagnation is creeping into the console space at a steady pace! Microsoft and Sony are the only ones currently competing with one another. Imagining the idea of Nintendo and several other companies with cool ideas jumping into the fray...Makes me shiver with delight! While it would be messy at first, with luck the situation would become quite interesting. Though developers would have to struggle with making multiplatform games more so than they do now.

Monolithic products are bad for the consumer, as without forces outside of them keeping those companies honest, it's too easy for those companies to screw with end users! As there would be little in the way of alternatives that the end user could choose to get away from a corporation's bad decisions.

    WanderingPoltergeist,
    WanderingPoltergeist avatar

@inspirationgrid Nostalgia is one hell of a drug that we've all fallen victim to at some point. However, if they made awesome hardware...I wouldn't mind at all!

I think even the more compelling games I've played used fast travel...Not as an excuse to reduce exposure to a tedious world, but to respect a gamer's time! I prefer fast travel to hubs and allowing me to make a short journey to wherever my next objective is. No Man's Sky has my favorite system for fast travel: Teleportation Portals which you can use to create a network of fast travel spots. It makes exploring previously settled planets a lot easier but still encourages the player to explore their unique universe. It's limited, but in an elegant way which I find to be pleasing.

I can only think of one game that made travel boring: Skyrim. The main reason is that once you've experienced one random event...You've seen them all as there's no flavor to those random on the road events. Fast Travel to any point on the map was designed to hide the blandness of Skyrim.

Even Hideaki must realize that travelling the same road repeatedly will become dull because one can only pack so many random events in a game...I hope that he makes for an option to even avoid that level of tedium in the extremely late/post-game. Else his game will become the very thing he's critiquing.

    WanderingPoltergeist avatar

That's why I honestly respect Nintendo execs because they will take pay cuts over laying off staff when the going is tough! They might occasionally do shitty things or make out of touch decisions but at least they care about the health of their companies. Game companies can't make good games without talent.

    WanderingPoltergeist,
    WanderingPoltergeist avatar

This isn't a necessity for Riot; the American Gaming Corporations are addicted to layoffs because it's a naked display of their power. If they were made to take responsibility for their bad financial decisions, CEOs and other corporate leeches would have their unnecessarily high pay cut.

    WanderingPoltergeist,

If it's optional, I don't mind if multiplayer is being considered. However, I want them to focus fully on making a rich single-player experience (my personal preference for games) as a lot of games that just shoehorned in multiplayer were lacking in the single-player experience. My interest is always diminished by the mention of multiplayer, I will take a wait and see approach when this sequel is released and reviewed before forming a real opinion.

I'm more than happy about the Xbox version of Persona 3 Reloaded...It shocked me that Xbox was getting some more Atlus love! If anything, I would hope Atlus saves the effort for a successor to the Nintendo Switch, which seems to be in the hands of some dev studios (based on rumors).

    WanderingPoltergeist,
    WanderingPoltergeist avatar

The narrative director had little to do with the technical elements of the game; that jab should've been directed at the higher ups who forced this game to be pushed this game out the doorway too soon! I'm sure the developer team was disappointed with the broken launch of their game, but we need to be reminded that CDPR doesn't get off scot free. The hype they're trying to build needs to be cooled with reminders of their past behavior.

I know a LOT of the community absolutely love both Idris and Keanu, but I think one reason why I feel so disconnected to both their characters is that I never cared about either actor all that much.

In short I am one of the few players who do not have an emotional commitment towards either character just by hearing their voices.

@WhyNotZoidberg I'm the same way...Except I respect the work of Idris and Keanu; I don't immediately become committed to the character they play. Unless they show me with great acting that there's a reason for me to care about their characters in game! A flat performance will net absolutely no response at all from me. I ended up liking Johnny Silverhand deeper into my playthrough of Cyberpunk 2077 only because Keanu put a lot of work into portraying him. It felt authentic to the point my impression of the chaotic, rocker bad boy who made dumb freaking choices...Made me begin to adore the deeply flawed Johnny. I've yet to experience Idris's character because I haven't bought the DLC. I'm intrigued though based on the marketing material, at least. I love a great mystery thriller!

Larian Studios made a beautiful game without microtransactions, battle passes, and other BS! I think not being on GamePass is quite alright as they deserve the full asking price for this wonderful game! I am going to buy Baldur's Gate 3 for my Xbox because I love the game so much (I also want to create a Charismatic Terror character...This gives me the excuse to do just that).

That's a shame as I was hoping to play Baldur's Gate 3 on my Series S sometime this year. I'll just wait for it to release on Xbox instead of getting it for PC. I've got other games to entertain myself until then.

Trying out some clients. I dont think they are as good as the iOS ones, in general. Of course, this could just be my Apple-way bias, but switching between timelines and lists is way clunkier, for example.

Megalodon is the one I like best so far. If you're on Android, what's your favourite app?

@john I'm using Fedilab on Android, it's an amazing app after trying quite a few Mastodon Clients. Fedilab is always smooth in terms of transitions to different timelines. The Dynamic Theming is so freaking smooth.

You're right because the art is consistent, there is a nonverbal story being communicated by these images...I wouldn't have considered that consciously without you calling attention to it!
