M44, the Beehive Cluster

One of the nearest open clusters to Earth, containing approximately 1,000 stars, M44 is visible as a small nebulous object under dark skies. It has been known since ancient times and was studied by Galileo.

The Perseus molecular cloud is a giant molecular cloud located approximately 1000 light-years away in the constellation of Perseus. It comprises gas and dust weighing over 10,000 solar masses in an area of sky 6 by 2 degrees.

The gas-cloud is nearly invisible except for two clusters, IC 348 and NGC 1333, where low-mass stars are formed.

Just bought RC Astro's BlurXTerminator plugin for PixInsight.

This is a comparatively cheapo SkyWatcher 80ED with lousy "flattener" maladjusted, near the far-left middle edge of the frame, before and after running BlurXTerminator.
I had to check twice I was still comparing the same section of the frame, it's that radical an improvement.

It sure lives up to the hype and then some ๐Ÿ˜€

@thomasfuchs Blimey. I might have to get the newt back in operation as well - was last seen suffering from coma and pinching galore :)

xylophilist,
@xylophilist@mastodon.online avatar

@stfn @thomasfuchs I was wondering about using it for astro-landscape work too - a neighbour a couple of streets away mentioned the other day about using PI for processing aurora photos, which had simply never occurred to me ๐Ÿคฏ So why not go the whole hog? :)

xylophilist,
@xylophilist@mastodon.online avatar

@stfn @thomasfuchs Oh, now there's a thought - I have a Helios 58mm in M42. Classic, known for its soap-bubble bokeh. I wonder how BX handles that :D

@stfn @thomasfuchs Yummy. I have a 300mm f/4 Takumar somewhere. Definitely worth a punt :)

And now for something different - exploring the Borders.
I found the exact spot the River Clyde starts as a confluence of a couple of other smaller rivers from the south at the appropriately named Watermeetings.

About 4 years ago I was struggling to get 12Mbit/s ADSL. Now we have gigabit fibre and oh my word am I using it tonight.

One browser is uploading a 50GiB video to YT while another browser uploads the 20GiB equivalent to FB. The same wee macbook air is also rendering artwork for a future video thumbnail with Stable Diffusion as well. And another workstation is downloading Arch linux updates at 5-10MiB/s.

All at once.

Aurora, Edinburgh

Sometimes you just gotta sit on a bench beside the Observatory, eating fish & chips from a favoured chippy (Stefano's on Morningside Road) in a chilly -1ยบC under light of a full moon whilst watching the remains of an aurora display as Orion rises.

This is one massive aurora display on the go. Too much cloud in the wrong places to be seeing any red but it was right overhead and down into the southern side of the sky... Just wow.

The aurora was still going strong by the time I got back home. Such colours, curtains and ray structures.
Utterly awesome.

Sitting patiently whilst Julie re dyes my hair aka regingering reading about #FreeBSD of all things. I've read about the differences between #Linux and #BSD and now I'm onto the ports system and OMG I'm nearly tempted to give it a whirl on my trusty old test laptop. :freebsd:
How many folk have if any have switched from Linux to BSD and if you have please tell me why and what you prefer over the former ?

PS I'm a #VoidLinux user

Please share for a greater response โค๏ธ

@JustineSmithies I had a phase of using it back in the mid/late 90s. Loved it. Something feels... solid about it.
Also tried using it as an infrastructure/gateway box a few months ago on a raspberry pi but that combination proved unstable (possibly more the pi's fault).

It's mostly a matter of virtualization for me - I need more linux distro containers than I do fleebse, otherwise I'd try harder to find a place for it.

The Dee had burst its banks and was flowing fast, wide and turbulent - I've never heard such awesome loud deep booming and roaring noises as from the Potarch Bridge.
