The impressive 3.2m high Maiden Stone in Aberdeenshire. This Pictish symbol stone is thought to have been carved in the 800s. Was it a memorial, or the result of a young woman losing a bet with the devil and being turned into stone? More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/inverurie/maidenstone/index.html

The magnificent Dunnottar Castle on the Aberdeenshire coast south of Stonehaven. Probably a defensive site for two thousand years or more, no other Scottish castle comes close in terms of a sense of sheer brooding impregnability. So it’s a week since the Aurora. This panorama is from last Friday night and is a stitch of sixteen shots taken randomly towards the general direction. The actual Aurora covered the sky from around east to southwest so the only way to get the full arc with the zenith and the columns was by doing this panorama. For the nerds this was stitched with shots using a 16mm FF lens at f2.8, ISO400 and 5 second exposures #Aurora #Aberdeenshire #Scotland #StillPinchingMyself

This female red squirrel has been around a lot lately spending time feeding. It’s the time of year that these reds will have young and her teets are quite pronounced. Hopefully, she has some offspring to look after back at the dray #Aberdeenshire #Scotland

Over a period of six centuries four different castles in three slightly different locations under two different names were attacked eight times. A fine 2.5m monolith for today's #StandingStoneSunday - this is Lulach's Stone in Aberdeenshire. Sweeping views to Tap o' Noth. The stone is said to commemorate Macbeth's stepson, who was killed in battle, although the stone is more likely a much earlier monument. In folklore it's reported to have crushed a treasure-seeker to death.

Visited March 2011.
