after spending yesterday in a disaster recovery design mess all day, I just can't focus today.

in elementary school, in 4th grade we were able to add band/orchestra/chorus to our schedules. I really wanted to play violin but it was $75 a semester to rent one and we couldn't afford it. I made my own violin with a box, scrap wood for the neck and bow, huge rubber bands for the strings. It didn't work too well. I cried.

while almost everyone else went to band/orchestra/chorus, I worked on the apple ][e we had in the classroom and became part of the school's troubleshooters who went around to classrooms when a teacher had trouble with a computer/printer and fixed it up. (helpdesk lmao)

the teacher pulled me aside after a week and asked me to move to the guitar ensemble class (I would not because my just-broken-up-with exbf was in there) but he gave me their music and I did perform with them a couple of times.

I borrowed a friends bass and we formed a band and screamed and made a lot of noise and wrote terrible songs.

then I went away to college and since I didn't have any guitars, stopped playing. and stopped playing to the point that I recently found out that my serious bf from that time never knew I played guitar at all! 🤯

then I married into a musician family (partner, his bro, bro's wife-- all competitive pianists), partner plays like every instrument, though mostly as a drummer in bands.

I really wanted to play bass so I would practice bass lines on the acoustic guitar. 😂 couldn't afford a bass guitar. couldn't get a job because I had to stay home to take care of my siblings.

my second semester of my senior year of high school I needed to fill in a class period so I threw guitar class in there.

xantha,

so I played guitar at home some but not with any regularity then. in junior high I had music class one quarter and we were allowed to play guitar, keyboard, or both. I tried both but gave up on piano and went to guitar.

I kept playing at home and studied chord diagrams and learned music theory from books we had around the house.

my parents met in guitar class in high school (seriously) and so we did have a classical and an acoustic guitar in the home. my dad would let me come with him when he went to chuck levin to get strings or whatever and he always tested out an electric. eventually he bought one (right after his parents died?) and it was a huge deal. he was always pretty cool about letting us play it.

Twenty three years later(! 2018), I was finally like, I can afford a guitar now. I don't need to be serious. I don't need to explain this to anyone. I don't need to play every day. I can just do what I was doing in my preteen and teen years and enjoy making sound come out of an instrument. I can enjoy putting things together and learning new techniques. It doesn't have to be for anyone else, it can just be something that's enjoyable for me.

so like, certainly my half-assed mostly self-taught, mostly noodling, unserious guitar history is nothing to these serious musicians.

it was weird though, because so many of my high school friends thought I'd go on to be a musician somehow, and it's like totally not something people who were close to me from college on had any idea about, like I hid it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

spent the entire day working out how the backup software vendor implemented log shipping ... very poorly. 🙀 They're just wrapping around mssql but obviously didn't bother implementing all of the arguments so they're missing some important ones.

for example. if you've implemented logshippin and you want to test it, so your primary is still available, you'd normally take a tail log backup with norecovery (a very dumb name for it tbh) which takes a backup of all the final transactions,

xantha,
@xantha@petrous.vislae.town avatar

puts the db into recovery mode so that nothing can modify it, but it's ready to accept restorations.

this backup vendor... you can take an ad-hoc transaction log backup but you can't do it with norecovery. what does this mean? two things:

first: in order to put the db into recovery mode, you have to do a COMPLETE restore and "keep database in restoring state" -- this is RIDICULOUS and wasteful when all that needs to happen is a tiny tlog backup with norecovery.

xantha,
@xantha@petrous.vislae.town avatar

second thing: now you have a brief window where the ad hoc tlog backup has been taken but before the db has been put into restoring mode where transactions could have happened and won't be captured.

on top of that, in order to configure things going back to the primary after a failover, you have to delete the existing configuration (even though it's going to be relevant again). and wait wait wait for the service to refresh (30 minutes) and you can't manually force it to happen quicker.

there's more. I did get it to work and some of it can be scripted, but this is actually worse than the native solution. 😩

xantha,
@xantha@petrous.vislae.town avatar

ms deprecated db mirroring. availability groups we can't use in this case because we don't want everything. i like log shipping if your business rto and rpo allows for it (in this case it does). it's easy and just works and there's a reason why it's still in use all these billions of years later.

tfw you apply a cumulative update in the development environment and funnily get an error that when you check the release notes, was fixed three updates previous. I hope I didn't screw myself here. #Regression

a charter school nearby didn't let a student into prom because she was wearing a suit with pants. 😡

In the early 90s, I went to my high school homecoming in pinstriped dress pants with suspenders and chucks and a rainbow necklace. However. for my hs graduation, they had some sort of dress code requirement that I refused to adhere to so I didn't attend. (couldn't wear boots or pants? I forget)

partner, "what are all these packages?"

me, "replenishing hurricane supplies."

when I talked to the local homeowners insurance broker last week, he said "modern pool cages usually are so well made they don't get any damage in hurricane" and I LAUGHED because we were the ONLY house who didn't completely lose their pool cage, because our house is an L shape and the pool cage is in the nook of the L (L on west and south, neighbor on east, canal north) , which shielded it from the wind.

@xantha@petrous.vislae.town avatar

I've kind of ignored the lanai since the hurricane because the inside of the house is more important. it's a disaster out here partly because it became a place to stash things so we could repair areas inside. I'm trying to attack it now. anyway. Hesh is chilling out which is kind of rare. he's a little warm so I'm going to send him back inside soon though.
