Almost exactly where Tom will be laid down. Just front & left of a large pine & just right of the entrance, placard & entry sign for the Purisima Cemetery. Parking is on the road shoulder across the street. (Don't use Apple Maps using the official cemetery address or you will end up a mile away at someone's house. Google maps is somewhat better but still confusingly far from the entrance & parking.)

COBOL attempts to allow expression using English-like syntax. As part of that it allows abbreviated specification of logical expressions.

For example
IF X = 'Y' OR 'N'
is interpreted as
IF X = 'Y' OR X = 'N'

But when you introduce "NOT" things become non-intuitive:
IF X NOT = 'Y' OR 'N'
is interpreted as
IF X NOT = 'Y' OR X NOT = 'N'
(always true!)

If you meant
IF X NOT = 'Y' AND X NOT = 'N'
the abbreviated form would be
IF X NOT = 'Y' AND 'N'

As you know, back in the 1970s Polish jokes were popular, where the punch line would inevitably imply that the Polish were of generally lower intelligence than average.

But the best Polish joke I ever saw reversed the brunt of the joke onto whoever tried to follow it to such a conclusion.

Unfortunately the joke doesn't work anymore, because the phone company broke it when they switched from rotary dials to touch-tone.

As far as I remember, none of the rotary-dial phones I've ever seen have Q or Z, and all of the touch-tone pads I've seen do have both Q and Z.

Where were Q and Z on the very early phones? On 7 and 9 like today's touch-tone phones? I vaguely seem to remember seeing some phone with Q and Z on zero, but I'm not certain about that.

When I was working on the first "Star Trek" movie ("Star Trek: The Motion Picture" - ST:TMP) - 1979 - I had an idea for a bit of fun on screen "business" for Nimoy's character -- a "calculation pad" for Spock. He'd be able to scribble equations and such on it and it would immediately reform the writing into nice fonts and do the calculations, etc. Of course there is software now that will do exactly this on modern tablets, etc., but this was many years ago.

We got fairly far along with the idea, when we suddenly had a realization. We hadn't seen the forest for the trees.

He's Spock for god's sake. He don't need no stinkin' calculation tablet!

The idea was canned.

Every so often #YouTube suddenly surfaces something fascinating to me that has actually been there for many years and I just never knew about. Today it suddenly offered me a one hour 1970 audio speech by satirist/comedian Allan Sherman at UCLA, during the Vietnam War.

At one point, Sherman was a worldwide phenomenon for his songs like "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh" [aka "Camp Granada"] in 1963. He was on television shows with some of the biggest stars of the time. Before this, he had created the classic game show "I've Got a Secret" and more. His life ended tragically only three years after this speech, at age 48.

I have never before heard him give a serious presentation like this. I didn't even know that it existed until earlier today. It's worth listening to, not only to learn more about the man, but to realize again how many issues today have changed so little since so many years ago.
