The backlash to "stuff a large language model into it!" is filling me with energy.

I feel like we are on the cusp of a tipping point where people are fed up with the way software and tech has been moving for the last decade. We either fight back, or give up, and I don't want to give up.

Keyboard collectors pretty much ruined vintage computing.

Bring back “snarf” instead of “copy”, you cowards!

twylo,
@twylo@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

I’ve been told it’s still “snarf” in Plan 9, but I’ve never been a Plan 9 user. It was heavily influenced by the Blit, though.

I’ve finally got the MFM emulator working properly so I can relive AT&T’s gigantic misstep in entering the UNIX hardware market. The 3B2 is a dreadful computer, but I have a fondness for it that I can neither explain, nor justify.

Without googling, did you ever read or hear of "Zen and the Art of the Internet" by Brendan Kehoe?

After taking the poll you may of course google it. But please no spoilers in the comments until the poll closes.

@amoroso A printed copy was given to us by the Cornell IT department when we requested a Unix account. I still have my copy!

You cannot have a non-commerce clause in an #opensource license any more than you can have pork in a "kosher" recipe.

twylo,
@twylo@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@vwbusguy I would agree that it is not true open source, but these days I might find it more admirable than true open source. I think the GPL is a perfectly fine compromise though: Commercial is fine, but you gotta share.

No, but seriously, I'm tired of the situation where everyone knows that Symbolics Portable Genera exists and runs well on multiple modern architectures, but nobody can use it for sticky legal reasons. At the same time, the Medley Interlisp folks are out there making fantastic progress modernizing and preserving their original vision, now open sourced. It's a stark contrast.

If you want a real productivity boost you should spend less time learning ChatGPT and Copilot, and more time learning sed and awk.

Hi I’m a professional C developer and I still need to look up function pointer syntax every time I need to use one as a parameter, ask me anything

I used to think I knew DNS, until I got a job working on a DNS resolver. Now I know that I don't know DNS.

twylo,
@twylo@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

I'm fairly certain that DNS is unknowable, in its entirety. It is Forbidden Knowledge.

As I feared would be the the case, the support rope on one end of my dipole has become permanently stuck, the tree branch has grown around it. That antenna is never coming down, which is rather inconvenient. #hamradio

I don’t read Hacker News out of principle, but sometimes I would like a link aggregation feed. What is everyone’s favorite non-HN aggregator?

i'm seriously falling in love with php after 15+ years since i last used it

writing my own markup language to generate static html in php is SO much fun. and i don't know a damned thing about writing parsers

i find markdown kinda needlessly complex, so i stole a handful of its symbols that make sense, and stripped it down to its bare necessities

now i can generate bold, italic and highlighted text as i write documentation for #tomo

https://tomo.city/index.php?page=history

twylo,
@twylo@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@vga256 PHP got a really bad rap, and some of it was deserved, but it’s not bad and the deployment model literally cannot be beaten. You just drop some files somewhere and it works?!?!?
