Destroying the planet we live on -- the only planet we can live on -- is of course totally legal and even supported and subsidised by governments around the world (including #Scotland's).
But PROTESTING against destroying the planet? That's illegal. That's very, very illegal. Don't even think about doing that.
@simon_brooke@lienrag@pgcd@TomSwirly it would (will? hopefully not) be an apocaliptic catastrophy (and for some, it already is), no one here is arguing that, but some places on earth would still be livable, and some people, a much smaller population than now, would still survive there, it would be an incredible setback for humanity, and many other species, but it would almost cerlainly not be the end of it. Now, more importantly, how do we make it as small a disaster as possible?
FFS ... Those things on a clock dial are called hands ... HANDS ... And what the hand is pointing to indicates what that hand is called, like hour hand, minute hand, seconds hand and even date hand
Not pointers, handles, the big or little one or any other things you can think ... I have heard someone call them the "sticks"
The more I think about it, the major problems in tech and in society in general is that all the investment is going to solve problems that white affluent men have
@danirabbit some try to solve problems others have, and honestly it's not necessarily better, because they try to solve their idea of the problem others have, and can be something wildly inappropriate and even dangerous (and be frustrated when people aren't thankful).
I would say, best way to get started is to listen to people you want to help, and try to design solutions with them, and pay a lot of attention to feedback.
@ehmatthes i knew about it, as i've went through the help() for the module several time to look for things appropriate in specific situations, but i don't think i ever though about using it when this one would have been appropriate.
chain() and izip() are probably still my most used ones.
@evan strongly disagree although i am sure that some some (including russia) are playing on it for more destabilization, it's not the cause, the cause is how terrible this war is.
@nus@evan yes, they will lie if needed, or useful, but if they don't need to, and still fan the flame of divisions, they'll gladly take it, it's even more effective.
I don't have proof for this particular crisis, but we know that russia is financing parties and individuals (that accept it) who are generally in the opposition or critical of the establishment (outside of russia, of course), and they do create and disseminate {dis, mis,}information to make other countries harder to govern, so…
@nus@evan yeah, i don't know this one in particular, but i've seen people use the palestinian cause to push pro-assad narratives, it's disgusting. I believe it's a strategy of co-opting passions about important subjects and redirect them into their particular politics, rather than being accidentally right about one thing.
@raiderrobert well, constants are not mandatory, though useful, it doesn't seem minimal to me (much less than floats, that you omitted). While can also replace for, but i agree for (especially with "for each in…" semantics) is a significant improvement, worth having in even a minimalist language.
@raiderrobert ok, i guess i was assuming the context was "being able to build things", rather than tinkering with other's people projects, as soon as you do that, you will need a lot more concepts, and they will depend on the particular thing you tinker with, so hard to define a specific minimum.
@raiderrobert Oh i think your set is sufficient for that, though constants seems borderline, probably because we don't really have them in python, and i've been mostly doing that for the last 20 years, though the concept is still useful without enforcement.
I think adding floats would significantly increase the amount of things that can be built, even if one can work around with multipliers, it's a bit limiting.
I would add user-defined structures, (though Mappings can be enough, i wouldn't…)
I was able to work for a publicly traded Japanese company with a market capitalization of $2 billion for over 5 years and climbed the ranks to regular employee.
They were able to fire me after 9 months not because of my poor performance!
@kotaro ok, porn is a challenging ethical problem indeed, the risk of abuse is significant (and it happens frequently, and has to be fought as hard as necessary), and on the other hand, making it illegal can make the problem worse, by depriving actors & actresses of protection.
You could think that protecting the right of the legitimate producers was on the good side of the fight, but if they themselves don't keep the high standard of consent and protection, i understand the need to resign.
@kotaro corporations are not (or very rarely) out to do good, they are in for profit, they need to be forced (either by market forces or by regulation) to do the right thing, otherwise, even good people inside are forced out because they hinder profitability with regards for other considerations, unless the right thing just happen to align with the profitable thing, which is rarely the case.
But it's always sad to get reminded of this by people being abused by them.
@DavidBHimself it's funny, because i was thinking of your post while the page loaded, and before the video started, or even i (consciously at least) read the title i though about the "pita-gora suwi-tchy" jingle, because that's literally the first example of cute japanese tv that popped in my head, more than 10 years about discovering (and last thinking about it).
