I decided to be #vegan for the week of #PyConUS 2024. I put little effort into this endeavor but I did think about it during each meal.
I'd like to share how it went, but first I'll note why I did this.
Since early 2020, I've been attempting to gradually reducing the animal suffering I cause (as much as I'm individually able to).
I focused one-by-one on small habit changes that had large impacts (e.g. I completely cut out chicken first). After ~2 years of this, I was #vegetarian.
@treyhunner definitely easier at home indeed, outside, unless you are in a very vegan-friendly region/city, you have to plan and check in advance, sometimes call in to double check, sometimes even have to explain or clarify the whole concept (which is not a great start 😆), but on the other hand, you can usually find cool places, with a little research (but some places are rough).
In hotels, i usually ask beforehand or on the first day, and they often find solutions, sometimes great ones!
@thomholwerda interesting, i really though it did. I still like redshift and other similar "evening modes", but that doesn't fix my sleep 😅.
Not an expert on that subject, but when i look for papers investigating that, it seems to be inconclusive, meaning some studies find an effect, and some don't, thus now i find it as hard to be sure it doesn't have one, than to be sure it does.
I've noticed that several websites where I've been happily using 2FA with them sending me an SMS message for years seem to want me to switch to using an authenticator app instead.
Is that really more secure? How? And if so, is that level of security realistically needed for anything a normal person might do except banking?
@statsguy sms is widely considered unsecure, yes, as it's possible to fraudulently clone a simcard, and get the sms instead of you, an app generated code doesn't have this issue, as they don't need communication, the code is time + key based, and if they did, they could communicate through encryption.
@statsguy NP, regarding the "need" part, that i had forgotten to answer, of course maybe not all apps need it, but one should not underestimate the ability to move "laterally", from gaining access to an apparently low criticity account/app, to others, by leveraging it for say, impersonation, or digging information that could help further attacks, email is of course the most obvious failure point, everyone has all their secrets in it, but social accounts can be used to extort money from friends
@statsguy so it’s really better to just be safe(r) by default, and give as little as possible an attack surface so say, if a state actor is working against you, you are certainly still in trouble, but if it’s "just" a bunch of scammers, at least you are not an easy prey for them, it’ll cost them too much time/money to get you to you hope for a worthy reward.
@statsguy Personnally i use freeotp+ for "one time passwords" like this, unless there is a specific app to use for the service, as this one is open sources and allows me to export my config in a file to save securely somewhere, in case my phone is stolen or lost (because yes, it can be a big problem if you lose your phone).
Speaking of hidden Nazi symbols, Trump keeps calling Manhattan's DA "Soros funded."
George Soros did not contribute to DA Bragg's campaign, but incessantly pretending he did plays into a range of antisemitic conspiracy theories surrounding Soros.
@LindaCollins11#ALT4you A male scientist, with water up to his waist, with a "climate science" badge, is taking notes, looking at a scale standing in the water, with "homeowners insurance rates" written on it.
@kotaro i do wonder, if you train an LLM on all the fugues out there, can it create new ones following the rules? If you don’t know them all, can you distinguish the counterfeit ones from the originals?
@kotaro Yeah, i heard there both strict rules and the habit of making exceptions to them (because otherwise it’s just too restrictive), it’s indeed this kind of things i assume an LLM would be able to pick up on, because it’s indeed like language, where there is both syntax rules that we break for the sake of conveying meaning in a better way. But that’s indeed from my fuzzy understanding of that subject.
It’s hard to say what LLMs can or can’t do (mimic well) without trying it, imho.
@riley i read it expressed somewhere, about how the increased productivity meant the time was much more valuable, that wasting it was a lot worse, which meant we were forced to work more, rather than use the extra time for leisure.
