It is a little frustrating that SuperCam isn't taking a break from doing close up shots of wrinkly rocks, to photograph Ingenuity from another angle.

I would think that the helicopter team would want as many photos of that final landing as possible, to help determine what, exactly, went wrong.

I was almost always able to find SuperCam's targets in a MCZ context photo, and the spot chosen was very rarely in the middle of the image! Also, the context photo was sometimes from the sol before.

I have been too busy with Earthly things to look lately, but as thunderstorms are forecast for this afternoon, I might have an opportunity! ๐ŸŒง๏ธ ๐ŸŒฉ๏ธ

In the "Mars 2020 Perseverance SHERLOC WATSON Camera Pre-delivery Characterization and Calibration Report" (K. S. Edgett et al, 2019) the expected depth of field is pretty narrow at close working distances. Very precise (or lucky!) positioning of the robotic arm would be required.

Well what a night it was...
I didn't expect very much since Munich is quite far south, but what unfolded surpassed our wildest expectations!
It took me a while to edit these images, in total I took more than 2000, but that also means there are some timelapses waiting to be processed :)

A nightscape image of a large satellite dish with purple Aurora pillars above it. A bright green auroal glow lights up the horizon and some dim greenish lights are visible up high.

Clear sky at lunchtime enabled me to get a photo of the giant, splotchy sunspot on our Sun. That thing is several times the size of Earth, which boggles my tiny mind.

Incoming! A severe G4 Geomagnetic Storm is expected to arrive around 02:00 UTC Friday night / Saturday morning.

At least 5 Coronal Mass Ejections took place over the past 24 hours, directed towards Earth. These originated from a large and magnetically complex sunspot cluster (NOAA region 3664).

There is potential for disruption of communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations.

And bright auroras as far south as Alabama!

zoomed in on what appears to be the path forward on its way to Bright Angel. That area at the center where slope increases is approximately where the rover will enter the field-of-view of 's RTE camera, about 150m W from its current location.

The way forward looks a lot trickier in the MCZ photo than it does on the contour map!

Those slopes look kinda steep for an easy traverse, even with 6-wheel-drive.

No doubt Perseverance will be very cautious while negotiating any of the planned routes. Definitely don't want to wind up in the situation that poor Spirit did!

The trip up from Three Forks has been generally pretty easy, as far as traction goes. From here on up the rim could be much different! I expect lots of backing and forwarding and stopping and thinking. ๐Ÿค”

What's really exciting about the drive down the slope of the Neretva riverbank is that at some point along the way, maybe within a week or two from now, the rover will be visible by 's RTE camera, at the top right corner of an RTE image, as seen in this graphic by @stim3on where I marked a possible appearance with "future Perseverance".

Now that Ingenuity cannot fly, a plan was mentioned whereby non-volatile memory areas used by flying algorithms would be made available for image and data storage. And, presumably, the RTE camera would be set to take photos on a regular basis.

Do we know if any action was taken to implement that plan and upload it to the helicopter?

Seems unlikely that the rover crew would allocate the resources needed to command the heli take a photo of Percy and transfer it.

IIRC, they said DSOC wouldn't be involved in 's data comms, but probably no one believed them ๐Ÿ˜€, I certainly didn't :

"โ€™s Deep Space Optical Communications experiment also interfaced with the Psyche spacecraftโ€™s communication system for the first time, transmitting engineering data to Earth."

So, it appears we should definitely expect spectacular high resolution images from Psyche, when the spacecraft arrives there, or even long before it does.
