A group of Mangrove Jewel Bugs (Calliphara nobilis) spotted on a leaf at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Singapore, on 3 Sept 2023. When I attempted to take shots of another gathering, half of them flew away, so I left that group alone.

A Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker (Dicaeum cruentatum) spotted at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Singapore, on 3 Sept 2023. It proceeded to pick up a fruit from the Calabur Tree and squeezed it to drink up the juice from it. Clever bird. 🙂

Happy to spot the Sumatran Gem (Poritia sumatrae) at Upper Seletar Reservoir Park, Singapore, on 27 August 2023. 🙂

This one is a male, with bright blue upper sides, so you can imagine it blinking like a tiny blue gem while in flight.

One of the nicest spots on my usual mountain bike ride.

@johncarlosbaez @loke Just climbing Bukit Timah isn't a lot of fun either. Ouch, my legs. 🙂

An Asian Emerald Dove (Chalcophaps indica) spotted at Ulu Sembawang Park Connector, Singapore, on 23 April 2023. An uncommon forest bird. The ones I've seen are calm, and will let me get close without taking flight.

A Sumatran Sunbeam (Curetis saronis) spotted at Springleaf Nature Park, Singapore, on 6 August 2023. Usually found in mangrove areas, this was spotted next to an open river (Sungei Seletar).

The upperside of its wings are orange, so in flight, it looks like a flashing orange-and-white object.

sohkamyung,

@thepoliticalcat Yes. Can be found in Singapore. That's why I mentioned the country in a hashtag. 🙂

Early alert. #InverteFest , organized by @franzanth is coming from 28 Aug - 3 Sept 2023. Share your photos of invertebrates during that period with the hashtag.

Only have pictures of your pet snail? That's fine, just post it during that time period. 🙂

My five seconds of fame. 🙂 Glad to have helped local bee reseacher Zestin Soh (we're not related) by spotting a rare bee in Singapore. Now we know a bit more about its natural history.

(CW: images of an assassin bug feeding on another assassin bug.)

Assassin bugs are known to feed on other insects. Here's one spotted feeding on another assassin bug. A Campsolomus sp. feeding on a Cosmolestes picticeps spotted at Tampines Eco Green on 14 April 2023. Yes, they are two different species, so this is not cannibalism.

A 'big-headed' caterpillar from the genus Carea (family Nolidae) spotted at Thomson Nature Park, Singapore, on 28 March 2023. It 'headbutted' the ant in the first photo to make it go away. :-) Of course, its actual head is normal size, and found underneath the large green bulge.

A Paradise Tree Snake (Chrysopelea paradisi) spotted at Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve, Singapore, on 16 July 2023. It was moving around, hunting for geckos at a shelter in the reserve. It didn't find any, so no feeding shots. 🙂

This snake is known for its ability to glide long distances by launching itself into the air.

A Common Bluebottle (Graphium sarpedon) spotted at Upper Seletar Reservoir Park, Singapore, on 26 March 2023. A fast flyer, about the only time I can get shots is when they are busy puddling (feeding on nutrients from poop and other sources).

A Giant Honey Bee (Apis dorsata) nest spotted at Pasir Ris Park, Singapore, on 29 June 2023. Happen to spot it partially hidden behind some trees.

These bees are larger than the domesticated honey bee. It builds a single large vertical honeycomb and protects it with their own bodies.
