‘Thank You for Allowing Me to Have Wrinkles’

‘This is precisely what I ask of fashion and cosmetics. I find it very reductive to appear younger than my age and in any case it’s a losing battle. I asked Vogue Italia not to retouch the photos and leave me with my wrinkles. Francesca Ragazzi, who directs the magazine, accepted: the new generations are looking for more modern and intelligent definitions of beauty.’

Zhong Lin is a self taught photographer born in Malaysia and raised in a multicultural community:

“I was brought up in an open-minded environment. I was unbiased since young, absorbing all cultures and anything new like a sponge. All this plays a part in the art I create.”

Theda Bara, ‘The Vamp’

The studios created a fictitious persona for Bara as a woman born in the Sahara ‘in the shadow of the Sphinx’ to an Italian Sculptor father and a French mother. They created an heir of mystery claiming she dabbled in the occult. Her contract requite that she wear a veil in public and only come out at night. They even mentioned the fact that her name was an anagram for ‘Arab Death’

Bara made more than 40 films in her career, but most were lost in the 1937 Fox vault fire and only 6 of her completed films remain.

Bara was born Theodosia Burr Goodman in 1885 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her father was a Jewish tailor from Poland and her mother was born in Switzerland. Her stage name, Bara was taken from her grandfather named Baringer. She was a popular actress of the silent era and one of cinema's early sex symbols. She earned the nickname "The Vamp" because of her sexually seductive roles. Mike Disfarmer (born Mike Meyer, 1884–1959) was a photographer known for his portraits of everyday people in rural Arkansas taken in the 1920s-1950s. His collection of stark photographs were rediscovered in the 1970s.

Disfarmer charged 50¢ for three postcard sized photographs. The subjects face the camera and rarely smile usually posing without props against a plain backdrop. Many are residents of Heber Springs.

Considered an eccentric, Disfarmer never married, and lived alone in the photography studio until his death.

Good News!

The title of photographer Kyle Weeks’ latest project Good News goes back to the “constant stream of negative stories” he observed about his home country of Namibia, and Africa at large … “Why is there never good news?”

He found his inspiration in Ghana where he spent 6 years photographing the vibrant youth culture:

“The youth have such an authentic approach to creativity. They have a completely different frame of reference. It’s so authentic and unlike what I see in the Western world”

Weeks is currently based in Amsterdam

Early Photographs of Juneteenth Celebrations

Taken during the 1900 event in Austin Texas, by photojournalist Grace Murray Stephenson.

The celebrations included free food, though many brought picnic baskets ot their own, and there was music and dancing that lasted past midnight.
