Why is it so hard for many Democrats to understand that the United States government mishandled Covid in 2020 under Trump and has continued to mishandle it under Biden since he dropped the plan he ran on in 2022 and switched to Trump's plan?

shawrd773,

@rchusid It’s hard for them to understand because they don’t want to understand.

I don’t need an explanation of how national politics works in the US, thanks.

The whole household is feeling whammied by the combination of flu and covid vaccines (and in my case, a lingering cold as well).

I’m feeling glad I intentionally scheduled it for the long weekend.

Nice to be back among the living today. 😊

That flu and #Covid double header is rough, but well worth it to stay safe and not get other people sick.

shawrd773,

@MaryAustinBooks Yes. We got ours yesterday and we’re definitely feeling it.

my MSA Advantage 900 finally arrived! but with no filters? I was pretty sure it came with a couple P2's?

oh well I was going to get P100s anyway and it's salary week. better to buy all the things I want now at the start of the month, when the end of the month arrives I mysteriously am always broke

shawrd773,

@elilla Oh, that’s a great mask. Comfy, and pretty even.

What a day, fellow Mastodonians, what a day.
It was time to get my passport renewed/replaced and friends took me to Prague in their car.
I HATE being in cars but the alternative was an even longer journey by bus (2x), metro & tram (and back), and what with #Covid still lurking and me living with cancer, I didn't need that kind of exposure.
Still, some 5 hours in total in a car, plus the leaping through bureaucratic hoops at the embassy, is not my kind of fun.

Which shows on my new passport pic.

shawrd773,

@Jantar I’ve long felt that passport photos should show how you’d look after a long day of travel.

Hi folks, having trouble finding much online, but maybe there isn’t consensus.

Do we have any idea of how to prevent getting long Covid after Covid infection?

Mostly I’ve heard the recommendation to rest a lot and not push back into the grind. Anything else?
#covid #longcovid #longcovidprevention

shawrd773,

@lisavogtsf Take Paxlovid?

Got my updated #covid vaccine! For folks looking for appointments, the Pfizer vaccine is available at Safeway in the Bay Area, or at least in #SF.

shawrd773,

@kurtsh @abbynormative Note that if you’re scheduling using the Walgreens app it will claim “no availability” unless you choose a specific date that still has open appointments.

Sick: Covid is no longer an excused absence at Westfield State Univ. in Mass. Email:

“As the pandemic has passed, the dean of students office & health services will no longer be providing permissions to students for class absences.”

*states the reason: due to numerous legal, medical, & educational issues associated with the practice.

This isn’t in line with other local colleges.#Covid.

I think if I were a sick, feverish student, I’d be tempted to camp out in the dean’s office for a while.

Masks are so politicized, part 987: Sep 26 California workers who cut countertops are dying of an incurable disease (Los Angeles Times) - https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2023-09-24/silicosis-countertop-workers-engineered-stone "Pale dust rose around them as they worked. Many went without masks. Some had water spurting from their machines, but others had nothing to tamp down the powder rising in the air." It's amazing how shitty people are to service workers. These people will scoff at service workers being paid a fair wage. They'll be incensed when service workers don't act like it's a privilege to take their orders. They'll point at them and tell their kids to do good in school or they'll end up like them. Yet, despite all of this, these same people will lose their shit when these jobs are understaffed and just blame the problem on "People not wanting to work."

shawrd773,

@BlackAzizAnansi I think this is also why people are shitty to teachers and daycare workers. They want servants who “know their place,” instead of seeing them as fellow working humans.

(Of course, if they saw them as equals, they’d have to contemplate the possibility that they too could be treated as poorly.)

My wife's company had a mandatory conference for all of their over 2,000 employees last week. She did not attend, thankfully. Even though it was mandatory she rolled the dice on a Telehealth appointment and the doctor she got thought it was wonderful that she hasn't gotten COVID yet, and wrote her a note suggesting that she be exempt from all in-person meetings for the next 365 days. Surprisingly, to us, HR at her company accepted it. We went camping while everyone else went to a packed, zero COVID precautions considered, conference.

No surprise at all, she's covering for many people out sick today, including the person she works most closely with who texted her to say she's "down with the worst bout of COVID yet."

She just got off of a zoom meeting with her boss, who also has COVID today, and is suddenly COVID cautious curious, let's say. She said it's her 7th(yes, seventh) known COVID infection, she has a "bizarre autoimmune disorder" that her doctors have spent a year trying to help her figure out, and she's come to believe that it might just be COVID related.

She asked how my wife has managed to stay COVID free, and my wife went ahead and listed out all of our precautions, and here's where watching this secretly from across the room blew my mind....The hangup was restaurants. She kept coming back to "You haven't been inside of a restaurant in 4 years?" Over and over. At least 4 times in the next 20 minutes she repeated that. Like it was some Herculean feat that couldn't be accomplished by the average human being.

I just don't get it...

Anyway, it was a bridge too far, and so she will continue getting COVID.

shawrd773,

@hannu_ikonen @BE Same. Every restaurant around here has a takeout option so it’s not a sacrifice at all.

shawrd773,

@depereo @johninfante @bowreality @BE I think a lot of people have convinced themselves that the one bad cold they had was “the flu.” I think anyone who has had the actual flu takes it seriously; that shit can lay you up for weeks.

So when they hear that covid’s “like the flu” that’s their baseline for an unvaccinated infection.

Why they don’t recalibrate after getting it, I don’t know.

shawrd773,

@GnoeJuan @BE Maybe you can find some with outdoor seating?

shawrd773,

@pouty3726 @BE The problem is that covid itself compromises your immune function. After the first infection, your vulnerability to another one increases. There’s hard limits to how much you can bolster it with diet and exercise.

shawrd773,

@shadyspotlight @aeischeid @BE It’s bizarre how people just accept that getting it is “inevitable” and do nothing to change the circumstances under which they catch it.

bbiiirdbPhD, to random
@bbiiirdbPhD@mastodon.social avatar

Like I don't know if people aren't understanding that every single day any of us go to an in person job, it is already a hostile work environment, just bc of the ongoing ignored threat of COVID.

shawrd773,

@bbiiirdbPhD Yep. My kid is one of 2 kids in their grade who still wears a mask. And this year there’s a covid-unsafe overnight trip planned (teacher was surprised to learn kiddo can’t go because of it). We have all lost significant trust in our community’s willingness to protect children from avoidable harm.

shawrd773, to climate

Oh, joy. The NYT and other papers are gearing up to use the “anxiety” narrative they used to minimize covid and discredit people who take it seriously to do the same for climate change. #covid #ClimateChange #media

I am having a hard time getting my head around the fact that my sibling (who I have not seen since January 2020 because she also has been isolating and flying isn't safe for her) is about fly to FLORIDA with a friend to go to Disney. I'm the super-high risk one in the family, but she is also now high risk. She has been so careful and now apparently she has to do THIS for her mental health. Make it make sense.
#NEISvoid #Covid #ChronicIllness

shawrd773,

@AlwaysInFlannel I feel like some people can’t handle gradients of uncertainty, and just snap when trying to whole-hog it 24/7. Then it’s like a switch flips and they throw all precautions to the winds. It’s eerie and sad to watch.

shawrd773,

@MolnarSteven @Brad Based on what I’m seeing, the parents are doing it to themselves too. It’s impossible to talk about it with them; the mere mention of covid brings a weirdly empty look to their eyes, and they change the subject as if you didn’t say anything at all.
