FINALLY AT LAST A SAM STAAB CALL UP.

https://twitter.com/thegoalkeeper/status/1792948654275223846

And I guess some other people made the roster. But: Staab!!!!

@uswnt #USWNT

shauna,
@shauna@social.coop avatar

@uswnt Okay, now that I've calmed down:

  • Crazy to see Hershfelt, Bethune and Weisner all getting callups (though Bethune and Weisner will not play in any of the friendlies, thankfully - let them rest). Spirit rookies are the best rookies!

  • Another callup for Aubrey. <3 Plus Trin and Casey, as expected. We are back to having a half dozen or more Spirit players in camp. More than Gotham...super team who?

  • No Lynn Williams :(

  • But! Crystal Dunn as a forward?????

  • SAM STAAB!!!!!!

#USWNT

shauna,
@shauna@social.coop avatar

@stefan That was mostly an excited and surprised "??????" I hope she actually gets time as a forward or midfielder, because she's quite good there and has wanted to play as an attacker internationally for a long time. That said, it feels like its her versatility that's giving her the nod over someone like Lynn Williams. Considered just as forwards, I feel like you have to take Lynn.

The people are definitely the best thing about #PyConUS but this delightful building with its gorgeous views is a close second

I am at the #PyConUS sprints, in room 310, sprinting on Pomodouroboros. But also, I’m available for questions about Twisted, Treq, Klein, Pydoctor, Automat, PINPal, TokenRing, Fritter, DBXS, TownCrier, DateType, MOPUp, SponCom, python-docstring-mode, streamrandom, QuickMacHotKey, QuickMacApp, or Encrust. I think I do a fair amount of open source.

tl;dr Good morning, #PyConUS friends. I leave early Monday morning, and if you are attending this year and we haven't met yet or run into each other, please reach out, and let's say hello in person.

Is there a copy shop near-ish the venue that is open tomorrow (Sunday)? I'd like to make (or ask a friend to make) about 40 copies of a single-page item, and missed my window today while things were open.

Hey ! Looking to take a break from the con with a little light reading? Stop by the booth to learn about your rights as a tech worker and how to organize!

shauna,
@shauna@social.coop avatar

And, now that the fedex is open, even lighter reading in the form of flyers :)

Basic rights one pagers! Stories of tech workers organizing! How unions can help prevent layoffs and/or get you better severance! Immigrant worker rights! The questionable legality of NDAs and non competes! Bargaining for the common good!

Hi friends! Do you know any labor organizers, lawyers, etc in Pittsburgh or nearby? I am looking for help staffing a worker organizing themed booth at PyCon next week. Taking place at the Lawrence Convention Center.

Looking for help with any/all of the following times:

  • 5-7pm Thurs May 16 (opening reception)
  • 7am-7pm Fri May 17 (expo hall)
  • 7am-7pm Sat May 18 (expo hall)
  • 10am-1pm Sun May 19 (job fair)

If you'd like to help but can't in person please DM, there's lots of other ways to help

It's disconcerting to see Girma, Dahlkemper, and Davidson all on the injury list today. I love all of those players but Emma Hayes & co better be thinking about backup plans if one or more of them can't get back to full fitness in time for the Olympics. This is why people (it's me, I'm people) complain about players like Staab and Gorden not getting callups. Even if they're just perpetual backups, sometimes you need backups.

Hi friends! Have you ever been part of a union, or group of co-workers, that collectively negotiated fewer/no layoffs, better severance packages, or some other benefit? Do you know of any group who has?

I'm making a zine and am looking for stories/info/advice to include.

I know these stories exist, because I have one of my own. In 2008, after the financial crisis, my union HUCTW negotiated zero layoffs through their Work Security program: https://huctw.org/our-services/work-security-program

What other stories are there?

Any recommendations of short (20 min or less) free online videos explaining a programming topic? Esp interested in intermediate-level stuff in the domain of data engineering and/or python. Can be a conference talk or any other format so long as it's well done. Bonus points if you think it's likely to work well with a facilitated follow up discussion.

I am looking to chat with one or more people who've been to business school about their experiences. I am not myself thinking of going to business school - it's for a creative writing project

shauna,
@shauna@social.coop avatar

@brainwane Do you feel like they gave you a sense for what they teach in business school itself? I primarily want to understand the kinds of things a person who was a business major in undergrad and then did an MBA would know and what kinds of biases/knowledge gaps they'd have.
