Occasionally I am reminded of how lucky I am that the timelines of my, uh, extremely cringy awkward teenage phase and the existence of digital cameras more or less didn't overlap.

Anyone have experience with online courseware tools that they like?

Features I'm looking for:

  • flexible course content (text, video, slides)
  • both at-your-own-pace and scheduled synchronous video sessions
  • cohort-based (e.g. session runs 7/1-7/15)
  • assignments and "turning in" documents
  • forums or discussion threads for peer-to-peer and student-instructor convo
  • nice simple clean student experience

Not Google Classroom - I've used it and dislike it

Surprised calling yourself a “Code Lord” isn’t more popular.

@frank if you’re really good at lambda functions would that make you an Edge Lord?

A question for my security friends out there, is it good practice for an IT team to send out a Phishing email to all users to ‘test’ them? Follow up question, if it IS a good idea, who do you typically use as the sender of the email? Like, the CEO, CFO, a high ranking IT person in the org? Someone else?

📺 Watching the final episode of S1 of Very Important People (dropout.tv) over lunch. The show’s been kinda “eh” for me overall - great concept but often dragged a bit. But this episode is amazing and wild and weird. It’s almost unreal how good Brennan Lee Mulligan is at improv comedy; he really is a genius.

had 2,551 in-person attendees and was "sold out”

had 3,393 (Checked-in people).

Anyone know why the tickets were restricted to 1,234 fewer in 2024? The venue seemed massive so should have had room.

I'm genuinely curious what the difference was. 48% more seats in 2019 is a big difference.

Ref [location history]: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Python_Conference

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@glyph @mkennedy the huge factor is of course that, uh, something huge happened in 2020 that changed conference attendance. Possibly permanent? Definitely long-term. Many conferences never recovered. Projecting attendance using pre-2020 numbers is ill-advised.

That said, I'd guess next year will likely have a higher cap, and I wouldn't be surprised to see '25-‘26, returning to California, to have even higher attendance than that.

I didn’t take a pic but same. (My usual post-travel routine is to take a test 3-4 days after I get back, or earlier if I have symptoms)

@jacob my search skills are failing me... didn't you write something once on the perils of managers uttering the contextless "have a minute"?

@tbaxter you absolutely should have led with “hey jacob do you have a minute?" ;)

If for no other reason*, I support a mask requirement at because the kind of person who doesn’t attend because they’re required to mask is the kind of person who I don’t want to hang out with anyway.

(* and there are lots of other good reasons too)

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

I’ll also just add — look, I’m someone who has decided to accept a fair amount of COVID risk. I’m living a life now pretty similar to pre-2020. I don’t mask much in daily life. I’d feel comfortable at a conference without a mask. I’m a bit hard of hearing and mildly face-blind so masks actually are a bit tricky for me. But I’m still all for a mask mandate because it’s not just about me! It’s about inclusivity and being welcoming and JFC wearing a mask is easy so why not? #PyConUS

@offby1 @chrisjrn what I get for tooting before I finished my coffee

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@durin42 well, you’re the first person I’ve heard from with a legitimate reason not to mask — every single other person, and there have been many, who’s pushed back on the mask mandate has done so out of bullshit “free country” crap or deeply unscientific “vaccines are the real threat” kind of thinking.

So to you: I’m sorry.

Also, I suspect if you reached out to the confernce, they’d find a way to accommodate you and I encourage you to do so.

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@durin42 I’m also super curious: if you were in charge would you drop the mandate? Even knowing that doing so would mean that a different subset of the community couldn’t attend? Or do you have some other approach in mind?

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@durin42 I don’t think I agree, but I’ll sit with that and see if my mind changes. In any case thank you for sharing your experience and perspective!

    Someone in my network tooted something about how #PyConUS has for years made space for PyLadies, and musing about what it might look like for conferences to similarly make space for @blackpythondevs. I love this idea and have been mentioning it to several folks, but I forgot who said it and so I feel like I'm stealing! Can someone help me find who said this so probably attribute?
