I have three new writing workshops coming up in June and July! Building on the success of Design-A-Ghost, I'd like to invite you to join me to explore some more familiar characters from and by reading extracts from classic and contemporary authors together, and then using writing prompts and exercises to create your own unique monsters, aliens, and robots! 👹👽🤖

#WritersCoffeeClub 24 Apr: When older novels use outdated or racist language, should they be edited for the modern world or left alone and viewed in context?

The way this is phrased feels a little loaded; everything should be viewed in context, ideally, certainly any older media or historical texts. No one's against context. 1/?

#WritersCoffeeClub 23 April: What is your strangest inspiration for writing?

It's gotta be reading about radioactive glassware, which inspired my story 'Canary Glass'. This article in particular: https://www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/these-people-love-to-collect-radioactive-glass/

Adopt older cats too! Ditto was around 8 when we got her and she has brought us so much joy. She's so affectionate and very chilled out compared to a kitten. She's my perfect old lady baby! ❤️🐱❤️

I don't think I've mentioned on here yet that @zenithed and I are getting a civil partnership (getting civilly partnered? partnering civilly?) later this year 🥰🎉 I'm not having a 'hen' or 'stag' do (aka a bachelor/ette party I guess) but I'd like to use the excuse to do something fun with my pals. Any ideas for what to call it? I've heard 'fox party' as a gender neutral alternative, which I don't hate, but would love to hear any other options you've encountered!

One week to go until Feeling Awful: Writing Emotional Horror workshop! ⛈️

In this one we look at theories about emotion and horror, read extracts from works by authors past and present, and do some writing exercises to give form to our feelings. There's also a brief section about self care when we're tapping in to difficult stuff.

Sat 20 April 5pm-7pm BST / 9-11am PDT / 12-2pm EDT, £5-£15

I can't remember the last time someone told me to watch The Godfather, or that it's the greatest film of all time, so I think it's time to give it a shot!

sarahijackson,
@sarahijackson@wandering.shop avatar

I operate a loose and rather childish system in which every time someone - usually a man, usually at a party - tells me X is the greatest film of all time and I must watch it, I bump it back another few years. Although I'm happy to discuss bringing it back up the list if they watch one of my favourites, like Giuletta Degli Spiriti or Orphée or Kind Hearts and Coronets...

I was looking for a free alternative to Duolingo and it turns out I can get free self-guided online language courses through the library. Of course I can! Honestly, man. Libraries. Use them, love them, defend them 📚❤️

Basilisk facts!

  • sometimes a lil snakey guy
  • sometimes a giant snake + cockerel mash up, depends who you ask
  • can kill you with its eyes
  • also its breath
  • don't touch it either
  • might be wearing a crown
  • destroys shrubbery
  • can only be defeated by a weasel
  • sprinkle basilisk ashes on your silver to turn it into gold!

I already love the Libby library app and use it to borrow ebooks, audiobooks, and magazines. But I somehow only just realised that I can also use it to borrow digital #comics too 🤩 This feels like an appropriate revelation for #WorldBookDay

Last boost: I've heard some hair-raising stories about people paying large sums for writing workshops and classes with big name writers who have then belittled or dismissed them, said offensive or upsetting things, or just failed to manage the basics to make sure people have a good experience. Things like keeping to time, sharing materials in an accessible way, giving people encouragement, making people feel welcome and safe. I find it so disrespectful 😠

Happy writing news: a rewrite request on a story has turned into an acceptance! 🎉 It's a pro rate market too, and a story that has been turned down almost 30 times. Very pleased it will get its moment in the sun 🌞

My soul is weary. TV-wise I have found myself down a rabbit hole of kindness - bender watching: dog rescue shows, Queen's Gambit, Queer Eye, even the Mister Rogers movie (which has a rather loving exploration of some dark feelings). I desperately need to see people finding paths through their difficulties, and the surprises of kindness that accelerate that.

Whatcha all watching to fill you up, give you a bit o hope for humanity?

@vlrny @lonelinesscorps Some of my favourite life-affirming Netflix recs (in the UK at least, hopefully available elsewhere too) are:

☆ John Was Trying To Contact Aliens https://www.netflix.com/gb/Title/81252991
☆ Rilakkuma and Kaoru https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/80196883
☆ City of Ghosts https://www.netflix.com/gb/title/80994664

The last two are just gentle and lovely, the first one had me in tears - in a good way!

"Each sea pen is a colony of mini anemone-like creatures called polyps, with all of the polyps taking a specific role within the colony. To begin with, one single polyp loses its tentacles and develops into the central stem, called the rachis (like in a feather). From this central stem grow the distinctive branch-like structures that gave sea pens their name. The bottom half of the central stem is a burrowing organ called a peduncle."

Peduncle!
