Why is the CEO of a free secure chat app so focused on "the European market"? Why is there any interest in a market at all?

Smells like there's monetization as a motivator or Signal is very important to our security agencies 🫠

raphael,
@raphael@communick.com avatar

@feld Why is it not secure? Do you mean the bridges?

raphael,
@raphael@communick.com avatar

@feld Maybe is wishful thinking on my part, but Matrix will start eating their lunch in Europe.

"ActivityPub servers should use IPFS as storage for public binary files like images, video, and audio."

raphael,
@raphael@communick.com avatar

@evan

Somewhat agree. IPFS makes sense to use as a caching layer and certainly it could help reduce operational costs of a Mastodon instance, but it's too slow to be the main server and it is impractical for mobile clients.

What I'd like to see is the possibility to send multiple URIs when storing/sending information about attachments. This one leave to the client to figure out whether to use a HTTP link or IPFS, or magnet links, or embedded data...

    Due to losing control of our Matrix channel, we are officially moving over to Discord for now.

    It's a shame, but we can't properly moderate our Matrix, so we can no longer recommend it.

    @pixelfed Matrix is federated. Something happened with one room, you are free to create another.

    Your reaction is akin to saying "I had trouble getting my favorite handle on pixelfed.social, so I am going to go back to Instagram".

    @raphael@communick.com avatar

    @pixelfed @Mrfunkedude we can do better than that. Let's make a deal: https://communick.com can host a Matrix server for you, pro-bono.

    Crazy idea of the day: how could I integrate https://cupid.careers into the Fediverse?

    If you don't know, it's a "OkCupid for Jobs" site that I did a couple of years ago. People answer questions and the system tries to find other people who are the most aligned with your professional values and the companies.

    @evan , how would one go about it? Make an account that publishes the questions as polls, and internally collect the responses?

    So, I’m curious: there’s a growing number of hosting platforms specifically for the . For those involved in this, who are comfortable with answering: is there a particular set of tools you use for managing, monitoring, and spinning up instances?

    Are those tools open source?

    I’m mainly wondering about whether there’s some kind of open platform / dashboard / infra tools that could serve a particular need for hosting / managing / provisioning Fedi servers, and whether the existing hosts in the space would benefit from a shared project of some sort.

    Not fully automated yet, but a short description of my setup:

    • Docker Swarm cluster to serve instances
    • Customer support via email / matrix / website / discourse
    • Ansible to deploy/update/decommission customer instances depending on their configuration
    • Logs aggregated via Loki, alerts and observability with Grafana

    The best way to preserve the fediverse is to provide support to it.

    Pay your instance admin if you can, if you can't boost their fundraiser posts

    Pay the developers who develop the software you use on there if you can. If you can't, boost their posts and help them fundraise.

    Also pay the projects non Dev folks. Because they help Devs to focus on the code while they do community development, moderation etc.

    It's an ecosystem and we can't rely on the whims of VCs.

    This is not a hypothetical. I offer (via https://communick.com) access to all the 4 services listed for $29/year. If you want 5 accounts (to bring friends and family) it's $119/year.

    raphael,
    @raphael@communick.com avatar

    @onepict @mwfc

    Any shout-out for small, independent commercial providers who provide accounts to Mastodon/Lemmy/Funkwhale and Matrix for less than $2.50/month and has pledged to donate 20% of its profits to the underlying projects?

    raphael,
    @raphael@communick.com avatar

    @mwfc @holsta @onepict

    I am in Germany, and I have built a whole portal site for people to manage their account.

    To avoid micro payments, just collect annually. Again, $29/year is not a bank-breaking expense.

    I'm really tempted to build a New NewGrounds. It's a fringe priority at the moment, just something that's been working in the back of my head for a while. I think the world needs a new outlet to create and inspire others.

    @alex @coolboymew Take a look at perkeep.org, especifically at the recorded talk . Maybe all you need is to work on more importers and indexers there?

    @debacle @mms oh, I completely understand how bad things are for #apple developers, and I honestly don't understand how so many people suffer from Stockholm Syndrome and still defend them as "superior experience".

    Step 3 of my evil plan regarding #fediverser and the #redditmigration has been executed. Anyone with a reddit account can go to https://portal.alien.top to claim their account at the alien.top #lemmy instance, and when they do so it gives you a list of your current reddit subscriptions and recommends the corresponding lemmy community.

    Now, on to build and extend the lemmy communities so that we have more recommendations to make.

    My post about communick on @fediverse was unfeatured and I got a 3-day ban for "advertisements".

    The post was well received and had 100+ upvotes. I've written it after someone found a comment of mine and said more people could be interested.

    I did talk about communick a lot on that community, but my participation was far from spammy. I also subscribed to plenty of other communities and kept any communick-related comments to the "right" place.

    @ruud , can you please confirm my account @rglullis is being perma-banned over a post that was perfectly on-topic and had +100 upvotes?! What was so bad about that post that could've been addressed in the post itself by one of the mods?

    One interesting phenomenon I am observing: what used to be a link to a Twitter thread on Hacker News is now a link to fosstodon or hachyderm. The center of the conversation place is changing, Twitter is becoming the periphery.

    @vincent I am working on a twitter-to-bird.makeup importer and I have some questions:

    1. Are you okay with that? Would it be too bad if you suddenly have some hundreds of users, each of them importing hundreds to thousands of twitter profiles?

    2. What would be a reasonable request rate? Is something like Mastodon's built-in rate limits (300 requests / 5min window) ok?

    I will make a series of polls to see if there is any viable business. Please boost for visibility.

    Dear @murena , I really want to be able to promote /e/OS, but it gets really difficult to do if Location services are completely unreliable or don't work on the Fairphone 3, even after all these years.

    The BVG (Berlin transit) app can never find the station when I want to buy a ticket. Is it an issue with the app, the GPS on the phone, the lack of Google Services, all of the above? Why is it that I can never get it to work when I need it most?
