Delphi, to Health
@Delphi@mastodon.scot avatar

Pandering to a lack of tenacity in society has become acceptable. Not universal as those with cancer & chronic illness show great determination. However, when it comes to supporting those suffering in #wars & public #health we read "does the #public still have the appetite for" &
"#pandemic fatigue" & there's acceptance of giving up or not bothering.
If those who went through #WWll had done this en masse many of us would never have been born. Has shared #survival instinct been lost?

radiojammor,
@radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

@Delphi Afraid this is not new. The state of the UK during WWII and morale was actually a censored secret, revealed only if you look at the likes of council meeting minutes which were secret at the time and considered unimportant enough to declassify later.
"Trekkers" was a common term to call people who left cities or other bomb target areas after working the day, staying with friends and family at night elsewhere, when German raids occurred.
High morale was a propaganda myth for newsreels.

radiojammor,
@radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

@Delphi The country was in constant fear of bombing or invasion. The media was completely controlled by The Ministry of Information.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ministry_of_Information_(United_Kingdom)

radiojammor,
@radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

@Delphi Naturally, this waned in later years of the war, but this myth of British grit and resilience on the ground in the face of the German enemy stuck, as no one wanted to admit the truth that morale was low and people scarpered.
Whilst British troops have been glorified for their efforts, let's not forget that WWII service was compulsory.
Ask yourself what would have happened if Japan didn't attack Pearl Harbour and aligned with Germany.

I love that “you sound scared” has become a way to shut down critics of AI.

…yes.

yes, I absolutely am scared of it.

No, I’m not ashamed of that.

I don’t hate AI. I don't believe it’s going to destroy us terminator style.

But I’m scared half to hell of the misinformation, political divisions, unemployment, manipulation, spam and deepfake porn and what it’s going to do to our world.

Like it or dislike it, everyone should have a healthy level of fear about what this technology can do.

radiojammor,
@radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

@VinesNFluff @markmetz @mrotteveel @Daojoan NO, that is NOT what it is made for.

AI has many, broad applications, many of which are BENEFICIAL.

The problem, as with any new technology, are the bad actors that misuse.

The fear you hear talking is more down to how your work is going to be done for you.

And then how are you going to survive?

The answer needs to be demanded from Governments NOW - and the answer is a #UBI.

GottaLaff, to newhampshire

As Angry Staffer noted:

This is why many of us have been yelling about the dangers of unregulated AI for years.

Via Kyle Griffin:

The attorney general's office says it's investigating what appears to be an "unlawful attempt" at voter suppression after NBC News reported on a robocall impersonating President telling recipients not to vote in the presidential primary.

radiojammor,
@radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

@qkslvrwolf @Tarkloon @GottaLaff You could say that about Photoshop and photocopiers before them. Want to ban them? People really need to put AI use in the same category as other tools, because that's what AI really is. You don't blame the tool for what it's used for.

radiojammor,
@radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

@qkslvrwolf @Tarkloon @GottaLaff OK, patronising arsehole, I am very aware of what the damn thing is, I use it as well. And as for not understanding scale (where did that even come into the conversation?), the exponential learning of AI - which is its name whether your like it or not - means it will continue to improve as a tool.

The rest of your BS response is ignored as having no bearing on the conversation.

You're more of a tool than AI is. Muted.

@fkamiah17 @Roadwarrior29 Caine has always flitted between money gigs and quality. From elsewhere: "when asked about his participation in 'JAWS : The Revenge', Michael Caine famously replied "I have never seen the film, but by all accounts it was terrible. However I have seen the house that it built, and it is terrific."
I maybe misquoting and I cannot find it, but I think he said something similar about The Swarm and his swimming pool.
And there's this👇

countcol, to random

If printing money would end poverty, printing diplomas would end stupidity.

radiojammor,
@radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

@selzero @FandaSin @countcol A little lesson in history: The Irish potato famine of the mid 19th century started when the potato crop failed. This was a staple of the diet at the time. However there WAS other foodstuffs in Ireland, which was fully under British control at the time. The British Gov left the matter to business. Commerce exported all the food leaving the Irish to starve.

scottsantens, to BasicIncome
@scottsantens@hachyderm.io avatar

We know how to solve homelessness, we just don't do it. Universal #BasicIncome would greatly reduce and prevent homelessness. Land value taxes would tax land versus housing, increasing the housing supply and bringing costs down. We also need YIMBY reforms too to build more housing and lower costs.

radiojammor,
@radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

@simon_brooke @peterbrown @scottsantens False.

There is NO evidence to support this paranoid fallacy.

There is no cabal controlling all Landlords that gets together and can declare they "put up rents by 'x' to account for the extra income"

The point of a UBI is to spend it on what you need, so there is no extra disposable income.

This is simply not how landlords base their rents.

Also: The disparity of rent/housing costs in many countries make including it in UBI as impractical.

radiojammor,
@radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

@simon_brooke @scottsantens Your "rentier shark" argument also ignores social housing and housing co-ops, as if they do not exist.

Your "and really, there's no point in Universal #BasicIncome unless it replaces all means-tested benefits" is absurd, not just because of the point about housing, but because many such benefits are not universal claims or entitlements.

You're not going to pay UBI to cover e.g. disability or ill-health, because not everyone is disabled or sick all the time.

radiojammor,
@radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

@simon_brooke @scottsantens Which is nothing to do with UBI and especially as Housing would not form part of it, for reasons previously given.

radiojammor,
@radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

@simon_brooke @scottsantens Kindly don't patronise me on UBI. I've studied it almost as long as Scott has - and you clearly do NOT know it well, otherwise you'd know about the housing issue, and wouldn't make absurd claims about it covering all means tested benefits.

radiojammor,
@radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

@simon_brooke @scottsantens This is a nonsense. You have clearly never had anything to do with managing properties.

radiojammor,
@radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

@simon_brooke @scottsantens You are a simpleton and I am nearly done with discussing this with you.

UBI will replace some benefits and not others that are NOT universal and CANNOT be covered by a single amount paid to ALL. I already mentioned housing and also disability. The concept of paying everyone an amount to cover disability is patently absurd. And housing is too varied to do so.

This is how little you have properly thought through your concept of UBI.

Done with this conversation.

@fitheach @simon_brooke Or, in other words, the Sturgeon fallback for the SC decision, which the SNP ditched when she went.

radiojammor,
@radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

@fitheach @simon_brooke I think you've struck Simon's point and mine. The SNP have already rowed back on what you suggest so the alternative is our own actions.

radiojammor,
@radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

@fitheach @simon_brooke Well I guess that depends on how hard-hitting any such action is.

I don't know what you mean by "We only have time to elect..." Before what? The election will happen within the next 12 months, rain or shine. Given the current SNP position, it is not very relevant to the cause. They will probably get a majority of MPs who will continue to talk to the wall, which will do nothing for us on the ground.

The tide and overton window torwards 'active resistance' is moving.

radiojammor,
@radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

@fitheach @simon_brooke I either do not agree or do not share your definition of hard-hitting

radiojammor,
@radiojammor@mastodon.scot avatar

@fitheach @simon_brooke No, for it to be legitimate, we need a vote, but a vote is being prevented, so we only have undemocratic and unlawful means open to us to obtain what should be both democratic and lawful.
We need change and we need to force change. The question is how. No doubting who - the who is "us".
