i like the idea of #UBI but i don't think it is workable with our current model of ownership--private property. i have little knowledge of economics, so i can't argue vociferously for this opinion. i can just imagine that any UBI i might receive could be easily taken by a landlord raising my rent, or another corporate entity increasing costs for other necessary purchasing like groceries, medical care/insurance, or education.

i like the idea of #JobGuarantee better. it makes more sense to me and seems to provide a less-hackable, less-manipulable floor as UBI proposes. it guarantees a livable wage and avoids the precarity of unemployment and gig work. but, again, i'm no economist. though i did participate in the now defunct CETA program when i was a teen.

i'm interested in what people think of #JobGuarantee vs #UBI. i'm not confident in my ability to argue for one over another, but i would like to participate in or observe a discussion geared towards a better understanding. my preferred solution would be implementing anarchism rather than try to rescue capitalism, but at least a #JobGuarantee would attenuate the pernicious ravages of neoliberal capitalism--again, in my opinion.

@bwinbwin @pluralistic What does this do for people that cannot work? Or the work available in their area does not match their skills or needs? UBI gives EVERYONE a platform that a job guarantee simply cannot do.

Your concern about rent is an unfounded fear. Trials show that the economic reasons for putting rents up do not exist for landlords with UBI.
If you think landlords collectively get together to charge more rent based on the assumption of more income, they simply do not do that.

And the concept that you can guarantee work for everyone's skillset is patently absurd and presumptuous. People are out of work because there is no work for their skillset in their area. Are you just going to create work for such people? How? Doing what? It's daft. The work is either there or it isn't.

@AuntieSyzygy @ScottishIndy To amend the law requires an act of Parly, which takes time, during which, Scotland acts - and if Scottish MPs are not present, then it cannot be applied to Scotland (or so the argument goes).
The argument also goes that the UK Parliament IS limited by the articles of Union.
Your reference to an unwritten constitution is kinda overridden by the point that the Articles of Union are indeed written and gave seed to the UK Parly.

@AuntieSyzygy @ScottishIndy We could have your 'Dear John' letter as a notice of withdrawal from UK Parly, pointing to Articles of Union (AoU). The UK Parly cannot legislate for Scotland without Scottish representation.
If a majority of Scottish MPs agreed to the union, presumably a majority withdrawing can undo it.
Scottish Parly I think would need to reconvene under its own steam rather than through Scotland Act, give itself authority for referendum to leave UK, for democratic vote.

This definitely makes you think.

Could a majority of Scottish MPs simply not turn up to Westminster and scupper the Union?

Or would it need to be a complete withdrawal? Therefore could any Unionist MP scupper this?

In any event, would the elected representatives of the Scottish people be sufficient for this to work?

I think not - but conversely, it would provide the powers to make it work, by taking back the power to make a referendum possible.

And you clearly have a country in mind with your query, when it could be applied anywhere, and without your query applying.
And as there is no proposal in actuality, how do you know if it will 'exceed production' where your query refers to? And what do you mean by that, anyway?

    If I could work out, in the blink of a eye, that was going to be a massive petrie dish for , why couldn't those supposedly qualified to run the ? It's time we stopped allowing unqualified , especially . Everyone else jumps through qualification & experience hoops to do the most basic of jobs BUT the country is led by utter incompetents. We'd be sacked if we didn't do a good . just get another job they aren't qualified for.
