@marcprecipice why do you think there are so many vacancies on the BART bike advisory task force? do advocates feel it's not a useful place to spend energy?

marcprecipice,
@marcprecipice@xoxo.zone avatar

@scott I’m not sure! Some members have been on for many years; some people show a few times and bail. I’ve found it a good use of time and think BART staff is more responsive to feedback than other such commissions I’ve been on.

marcprecipice,
@marcprecipice@xoxo.zone avatar

@scott Diversity of the task force is poor and that could cause people to bail when they show up and see no one else in a given group there. Almost all white men.

@marcprecipice@xoxo.zone avatar

@enobacon @scott is that a committee/commission for City Council?

This Thursday, 5-7p, my wife Gabrielle and I are co-hosting a house party for my friend John Bauters, who is running for Alameda County Supervisor, in South Berkeley. I’d love it if you came to meet John and hang out.

John is the former Mayor of Emeryville, and has helped make biking there incredibly great—a model for lesser cities like ours. I also find him incredibly thoughtful, energetic, and inspiring. He’s called “America’s Bike Mayor” because of his very broad effect on discussions of biking in America. https://thewaroncars.org/2023/11/07/1808/

I'd like to give a conference talk about what infosec can learn about risk from outdoor recreation — kayaking, backcountry skiing, climbing, mountaineering, etc.

A focus in these communities is “safety culture": finding ways to pursue inherently dangerous activities more safely. Lots of it translates to infosec!

If you think this would be a good fit for your con, reach out! I'm not looking for special treatment, happy to put a proposal into a CFP, just not sure who might be interested.

Bicycle racks at the Thousand Oaks, California main library. Seems like these are spaced out fairly well, although rusting! Curious on the grade @glightly would give these on accessibility. #BikeTooter #cycling

More bicycle rack photos, around the corner. A little rusty.

marcprecipice,
@marcprecipice@xoxo.zone avatar

@glightly @ai6yr totally. One fault of thick/angle-grinder-resistant locks is that if they're locked to thin racks, it just shifts the point of attack.

The Valencia Corridor Merchants Association wrote a letter to the SFMTA Board calling for the Valencia center bikeway to be replaced with curbside protected bike lanes by June and detailed suggested improvements to SFMTA’s “curbside parklet” design.

This is a huge development 👏

@LukeBornheimer that is awesome!!

marcprecipice,
@marcprecipice@xoxo.zone avatar

@LukeBornheimer I agree with them, for example, about the Lyft bikes. I find it stressful to undock or dock one on such a busy corridor. Side streets seem like an improvement for their locations.

When you fight for bike lanes in your town and read about fights in other towns, you quickly find that the same arguments come up again and again. Some of them are silly, some serious. I think this is the best and most substantive article I've read about the three most common political arguments against bike lanes (ignoring the "but they run stop signs" one). Well worth your time. https://www.tvo.org/article/debunking-three-big-myths-about-bike-lanes #BikeTooter #RoadSafety

marcprecipice,

@akahn I get that from vehicular cyclists a lot and I get what they're saying, but if the goal is to get more people cycling, I think low-speed, low-traffic streets + protected lanes on higher-speed streets are the only real answer. "This works for me" is great but static; "what will it take to get more people cycling" is the question, and will benefit them eventually, imo.

Unless I'm completely misreading/misunderstanding these reports, it looks like Waymo only reported 13 driverless, autonomous vehicle disengagements in California during 2023 (note one line is a 2022 report). Cruise reported …. none? https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/file/2023-autonomous-vehicle-disengagement-reports-csvdriverless/ I must be misunderstanding.

marcprecipice,
@marcprecipice@xoxo.zone avatar

@luis_in_brief @timlee I believe 2023 was the first year they were permitted to be on the road without drivers, so this is new set. I’m comparing the count against what I expected it to be (hundreds of disengagements at least), based on social media reports and videos. I can’t believe Cruise had none.

It drives me up the wall when people argue “Europe was built before cars" as a reason Europeans can support biking better than the US. On its face it doesn't make sense—we have much wider roads to reclaim for better uses, for instance. More, it’s ahistorical—many European cities were taken over by cars before they reclaimed space. This post has some nice before and after examples. #BikeTooter #Urbanism https://discerningcyclist.com/city-transformations-before-after/

If we dedicated 100x more cognitive and computational bandwidth to discussing how great The Matrix was, how successful it was as a motion picture

I still don't think we do it justice.

Like, I love the primacy of the telecom network in the first movie's lore. There's something instinctively magical about the OG telephone system, its arcane complexity, its fundamental malleability through patterns of sound

The first film wove that thread in perfectly.

marcprecipice,
@marcprecipice@xoxo.zone avatar

@danilo I recently showed it to our younger (13 yo) kid and the reaction was amazing—the effects worked for younger eyes much better than I would have expected. “When was this made?” I attribute that to skillful use of the effects for great impact, not just for show.

Hmm, that seems like a bit of a glitch--remind me to never wear a t-shirt of a pickup truck being towed down the street: "Waymo recalls and updates robotaxi software after two cars crashed into the same towed truck" https://techcrunch.com/2024/02/13/waymo-recall-crash-software-self-driving-cars/?guccounter=1

A family from last weekend's ride in were hit on their cargo bike this morning while a three-year-old was on the back. Fortunately, their child is okay, but the father, who was riding, has a leg injury, and they're all very shaken up. The incident location was half a block from their preschool during school drop-off hours, and is within two blocks of three other elementary and middle schools also doing drop-off.

This is my nightmare, every time I ride.
