You know that Parks and Rec episode where there’s an Easter egg hunt and the kids can’t find any eggs, because there aren’t any.
For #PyConUS this year, #PyCon is the park, and I’m one of the eggs.
Enjoy PyCon and talk with lots of people, but don’t look for me. :)

Almost all bday party invites for my 4 year old specify "No gifts please" or "No gifts necessary" - and I totally get why, I added it to hers as well. Are we moving towards a society that's not so into gifting? Or is this only a thing at certain income levels?

brianokken,
@brianokken@fosstodon.org avatar

@pamelafox I would have loved that. My kids are past the BDay party phase. But when they were younger, tons of kids expected gifts for attending the party. We had small prizes for games, but I was mortally opposed to party favor gifts.
I like the idea of “please no gifts”.

@brianokken I like your name Brian, if you switch the letters a bit you get Brain 🧠, which explains why you're so smart.

@astroboy My first student ID at university had it misspelled as Brain. Unfortunately, the dork I was, I took it back and requested a fix.

I’m listening to “Company of One” by Paul Jarvis.
Chapter 5 is about mindset.
The discussion about passion is worth the price of the book tenfold, and should be required content for students, new grads, new hires, and really everyone.

@hamatti Glad I bought the audio book. I can see listening to it yearly

Thanks to everyone who voted in https://fosstodon.org/@brettcannon/112395986863435778 ! An interesting outcome was that "chore" got a large number of write-in votes (see the replies to the poll). It was actually so consistent and numerous i wouldn't be surprised if it would have won the vote had I included it. 😅

For all my griping about Python’s ternary operator earlier in my Python journey. I think I use it way more now than I use C’s ternary.
See, I can admit when I’m wrong.
It just takes a few (or 11) years.

I cook. A lot.
One of my “secrets” I learned from my wife is to use a good Pecorino Romano whenever Parmesan is called for. I just like it better. It’s milder. Cheaper. And still excellent. Don’t use cheap Romano though. It’s rubbery. I buy blocks and first shred, then, process with chopping blade. Then refrigerate for a month or so while using.

@brianokken re: moving away from slack: have you considered matrix? There's the main free server and it's also pretty easy to run your own if you use containers

@djotaku I’m wanting it to work in close collaboration with my online courses. Since I’m migrating to Podia, it’ll be good to have single login for training + questions all in one place.

Stumbled across this article late last night. Listened to a couple tracks. Picked up the album today.
Sounds like it's right up my alley: a little #SpaceRock, maybe some #shoegaze, and dash of Cluster & perhaps some #Motorik Yay! New #music!

@pieq We have some good boba here, just not this time. I have been to Taipei before. I’d love to come back. Loved the night market and the street vendors with this shaved ice and mango and some sweetener that I still crave decades later.
