Everyone who thinks that Facebook should be given the benefit of the doubt and that their service should be allowed to federate because there will be good people using it should be required to federate with gab.com to show their commitment to open networks.

I couldn’t agree with Gruber more on this take actually. I’m equally no fan of Meta, but preemptively blocking their entry into federation seems like a dick move on the face of it https://daringfireball.net/linked/2023/06/19/not-that-kind-of-open

lolbat,

@andyn If you know that a punch is coming why not try to avoid it? Defederating a Facebook instance limits the reach of people willing to use it and thus limits the potential harm Facebook can do. Lets not forget what happened to Jabber.

I’m seeing bits and pieces of rants by various server admins in the Fediverse that are upset at the idea of big companies building ActivityPub compatible services.

This is really weird to me given many of us have been advocating for social network interop from the OpenSocial days but that got distracted by widgets/gadgets.

This comes across more like gate keeping in the same way nerds don’t want their favorite bands or hobbies to go mainstream.

lolbat,

@andresmh @dwgill @carnage4life So you’re willing to risk everything on the off chance that 3E won’t work this time?

I'm so tired of the way that so many otherwise really interesting essays end with 3 Bullet Points about Things You Should Do. They're usually generic and kinda pointless and often massively out of tone with an otherwise thoughtful piece of work. I doubt they create any change.

lolbat,

@grimalkina Is it something added to increase Google Page Rank perhaps?

lolbat,

@grimalkina There are many annoying things that people add to articles, recipes or online stores because Google wants it as part of their analysis. The TOC at the top of articles for example.

I haven't watched a Star Trek series and years. But I might have to jump in and try Strange New Worlds and Picard.

lolbat,

@heyfluxay Really couldn’t finish the second season of Picard. Watched the first two episodes and never went back. It just seemed like every TNG storyline jammed into a single series.

Do any of you have a “to do” list app that you really like? Ideally one that would ask questions eg “what is a task you need to do?” … “is it a multi step task?” … “are there things you must do FIRST?” etc.

Basically a linear question tree that then makes a to do list. I’m thinking of making one this summer but it probably already exists.

lolbat,

@futurebird @Verso I use an outliner for that sort of thing. What platform are you using?

Tried to pronounce "autistic" during an [en] interview, it was interpreted as "artistic".

Only caught it afterwards, when asked about what type of art I liked.

Not that type of "Man of Culture" 😅

lolbat,

@jbzfn On an episode if the IT Crowd one of the characters talks about his girlfriend saying she thought he was on the “artistic spectrum”.

Messing around with a cool new photo processor from @retrospecs . Very nice control over dithering and blending levels

PICO-8 (Dither: Bayer 8x8, Blend mode: Normal (Conversion) - 50%)

I'm honestly okay with Meta doing an ActivityPub thing of their own. Will it drown out the rest of the Fediverse? I don't know. I know some people are claiming that it will, but I don't think it will be that bad. First, who spends so much time in the Federated Timeline? The local will remain just your instance and boosts from others, so that's not an issue. And then you have your home which is only people you follow.

There may be technical reasons why this is bad, but I wouldn't know.

lolbat,

@thelinuxcast Meta is run by sociopathic twats. What positive reason do you think they have for adopting any standard?

I think I’m one of the (few?) humans who could use the new Apple iFacePlate right now. I’ve got this project where I’m intensely editing a large complex doc, frequently accessing several other large complex docs (& browser) for materials. I have a big outboard screen, but still a painful amount of window shuffling. The ability to simultaneously display and read more BIG windows than any physical screen could manage would make my life way easier.

#VisionPro #apple

lolbat,

@timbray That sounds more like a problem with window management and task management on the Mac.

Are you using anything to manage/arrange your windows?

Our paper "Prior movement of one arm facilitates motor adaptation in the other" is out @ #JNeurosci.

We show that the direction of a prior movement of the other arm is an effective cue to allow adaptation to interfering force fields. The brain seems to use kinematic information in learned sequences involving different body parts to adjust movements of the same sequence.

Also our data is pretty.

While you have to give credit to The Guardian for running Simon Evans' rebuttal to Rowan Atkinson's wibble about electric vehicles last week, it does beg the question of why they ran his opinion piece without proper fact-checking it in the first place.

Because you can be sure that Atkinson's genial celebrity status will ensure his views remain far more widely read & disseminated than the rebuttal.
