This was a fun one, so let's do it again. What is something you've learned that seems unlikely, even though you know it's true? Here's one I think about a lot:

Sight, while being something something many people are born with, is not an innate ability, but something we learn to do. People who were born blind or were blind for a long time, who get sight, have to learn to see.

jhavok,
@jhavok@mastodon.social avatar

@RickiTarr I had a friend who had to learn how to smell. She was hit by a car and got a head injury, losing her sense of smell and taste. After a couple of years, she began experiencing them in musical terms (she was a pianist) e.g. Chocolate was bluesy. After another couple of years of this synesthesia, she didn't even notice it, she just tasted and smelled as before.

"The ICC was built for Africa & for thugs like Putin... not for western & west-backed leaders", a senior US politician told ICC prosecutor Karim Khan.

This is the first time the ICC has sought to prosecute senior officials from a US ally.

Republicans earlier told Khan, if he applied for warrants against Israeli leaders, he would be barred from the US.

Potentally, also, the US could pressure the PA to stop cooperating with the ICC.

The Anti-Liberal Left Has a Fascism Problem

Prominent leftwing intellectuals are allowing their singular, disdain-driven focus on (neo-) liberalism to completely distort their perspective on the Right.

New piece:

jhavok,
@jhavok@mastodon.social avatar

@tzimmer_history Romantic revolutionaries are in love with chaos, and therefore covertly in league with the chaotics of the right. They believe fascism will lead to revolution, and therefore embrace the accelerationist tactic of hobbling not-left-enough politicians, often by repeating right-wing disinformation verbatim.

The case of Spain, where the united front was ditched by the communists, leading to a long generation of fascist rule with no revolution, is dismissed.

And he places much of the blame for the court’s allegedly illegitimate intrusion into redistricting on a surprising culprit: Brown v. Board of Education," wrote Stern.”

Weird fact: When he was in college, Black women wouldn't date him, and he wrote a poem cursing them for dating white men.

While some American universities remove peace demonstrators by force, Chancellor of UC Riverside, Kim Wilcox, peacefully reached an agreement with protestors, on how to ensure university investments and university study abroad programs are brought in line with university ethics standards. An agreement which specifically mentions the ending of programs in Israel.

The students have decided to end their protest, as can be seen in the attached video. Full agreement text:

Hey literature people--

So, I was reading HG Wells and I noticed something I hadn't thought about. He writes in a style that's very weird, and but for the Victorian/Edwardian language might even be considered experimental now? Like, in The War in the Air, it regularly alternates between goofy comedic scenes and scenes of horror and violence. And in between THAT there are digressions about economics and engineering technology. (1/n)

    Big Journalism's timidity is never more obvious than when, confronted with a blatant lie from a (usually Republican) politician, the news org then frames the lie as a mere mistake.

    Example today from ABC News -- headline:

    Come on, journalists, this just makes you look ridiculous.

We need to give up on bananas outside the tropics...although the hardiness zone for bananas may well be moving north.
