I drove to work for essentially the second time since taking on this job (about a year and a quarter), and it was the worst thing ever.

*Due to traffic, I did not save any time over taking the SkyTrain. The trip might even have taken longer by car.

*Drivers are the worst.

*Parking is insane -- I had to work late and there was no street parking open near my downtown office, so I had to pay event parking due to the hockey playoffs: $36

I hope I never have to drive to work again.

Even for the US in 2024 this is dark.

At some point I just need to lean in to my identity as a tech hipster. Yeah, I use Mastodon and Threads. Yeah, I use Bing and Edge as my default search and browser. Yeah, I bought a Zune. Deal with it.

Some #BC property owners 'panicking' following recently introduced short-term rental legislation

Realtors in some cities are already seeing a flood of listings, at a time of year when listing levels are typically low

"They thought they were going to make a mint because they saw what was happening in the gold rush. And now they're realizing, 'Oh, big mistake.'"

The thing about a temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is, when you think about it, there's no good reason for it to be temporary.

jbe,
@jbe@esq.social avatar

@barney
I hear you. But counterpoint: Israel is not going to bomb Hamas out of existence unless it's willing to plant very fertile and fast-growing seeds for Hamas 2. And for that matter, Hamas isn't going to destroy Israel without destroying itself.

Horse-race sensationalist headlines are like "Nikki Haley surging, Ron DeSantis steady or worse in primary race" and then you read the story and it's got Trump at like 60% among GOP voters.

I'm 100% on board with Jay Rosen's "not the odds but the stakes" approach to journalism. Mostly because the stakes are what actually matter, but also because odds-focused coverage has every incentive to pretend that even an open-and-shut situation is a dramatic nail-biter.

I still enjoy sharing my thoughts / dumb jokes on the Fediverse more than on other platforms. But as a mere consumer of content, I've been toying with BlueSky and Threads.

For reasons I can't explain fully, I'm surprising myself by preferring Threads to BlueSky. If pressed, I'd say Threads has been better for news and substantive political posts, though the theatre-kid silliness of BlueSky still has its appeal.

I still prefer the Fediverse model of course, but Threads might actually have legs.

I have one client who is actively suspicious of my colleague and me because we've been doing so much to help him even though his legal aid contract has expired. (We are working behind the scenes to get it extended, it'll be fine.)

He says we're doing great work, but then he'll email late on a weekend night like (paraphrasing) "what is going on?? why are you doing all this helpful shit if you're not getting paid? do I need to be worried?"

I think that's a testament to our work? Sort of?

jbe,
@jbe@esq.social avatar

We work with a ton of folks living in extremely marginalised circumstances, many of whom have been taken advantage of for longer than I've been alive. The fact that I'm their lawyer no matter what Legal Aid says, that I'll stay on until the court or the client themselves tells me to stop, is not always easy for them to wrap their minds around.

jbe,
@jbe@esq.social avatar

@Bam
Oh yeah, ethics complaints against Legal Aid lawyers here (the BC version of what we'd call public defenders in the US) are very much a thing. I'm sure I'll have one on record soon enough.

jbe,
@jbe@esq.social avatar

@Bam
Yep, I practiced a decade in the US before moving to BC, which is why I clarified. The fact that "legal aid" applied in the criminal context here confused me on arrival!

(I guess technically this system is more akin to how it works in states with no public defender agency, since it involves contracts to private counsel to rep indigent defendants. It just all goes through a Crown corporation here -- neither a ministry arrangement nor an entirely individualized contract approach.)
