Last week there was another training in the office, 3 days, with 30+ people in one room. Guess what. Today the first #COVID case from that group. (I only went in a few times to take some pictures, my test is negative). #CovidIsNotOver

jan_kirsch,

Redhat Germany crams 30 people into a room for three days?!

jan_kirsch,

@jwildeboer

Indeed, and many people have received COVID from colleagues. So there is nothing to improve here.

Mister Freemann, I would be surprised if the taxation of the rich/successful/happy people in the Netherlands is lower than the taxation in the USA demanded by Ms. Ocasio-Cortez. But I don't really know!

If you compare the poverty, misery, crime and social peace of the USA and the Netherlands from your personal experience, can you then exclude with a clear conscience that taxation and the social capitalism financed by it does not have a significant share in this considerable discrepancy?

And how many hundreds of thousands of John Bartlett's without a TikTok colleague (@m3nta11y1ll1) suffer the same fate every year in the USA?

Only a social market economy with a fair tax model that burdens the rich more than the poor can guarantee humane coexistence.
But the myth of the #americandream (#negativeliberty) prevents a structured, effective equalisation system.

At this point web applications have become slower than 20 years ago. I think more microservices and more JavaScript will fix it!

I am full of stories from the past in Open Source and Free Software. And at some point I will write a book about all of that. But right now I try to focus on stories that help with solving current problems. Stories that teach a lesson you can use RightNow(tm). The fun anecdotes also have their place, but let's focus on telling stories that break the 20 year cycle of repeating the mistakes we already made but with new tools :) Because that IS a pattern I see. Package managers, anyone? ;)

You have given yourself the answer. If the ego plays a big role, the problem is psychological, a basic human problem.
Even if you found a technical solution, the problem of reinventing the wheel over and over again would remain.
You have to change the human code, not the technical code.

84 years ago, on September 17, 1939, Soviet Russia - an ally of the German Nazis - attacked Poland. The Polish cities of Grodno and Lwów defended themselves heroically against the Soviets. Polish soldiers also fought to the death in the border fortifications of Tynne.
🇵🇱🩸⚔️🚩

Russia, in partnership with Nazi Germany, invaded Poland hoping they could participate in all the looting with which nazi Hitler was having so much success.

Stalin used the same excuse, the same propaganda, the same disinformation as war criminal Vlad Putin did when invading Ukraine in 2014.

Poland 🇵🇱 Forever! 🇵🇱🇺🇦🇺🇸

jan_kirsch,

@skykiss

The world stands by Poland? Like the British and French with their 1939 mutual assistance pact?
I hope the Poles don't make the same mistake a second time.

Without Pearl Harbor, the US would not have stood by and watched for much longer.
If another republican comes to power in the USA, all NATO countries should take another history lesson.

jan_kirsch,

@skykiss

Franklin Delano Roosevelt was a member of the Demoratic Party. :) It doesn't matter.

The problem is always and everywhere the same national pride and nationalism.
Only when we start thinking as human beings, not as nations, regions or other categories of division, only then will we as a species solve our primitive problems.
I cannot see any progress in this basic understanding.

Dear Russian Pilots,

We know you are desperate to escape the shithole run by ru-mafia thugs.

$2 million for Mig-31 with a Kinzhal missile

Ukraine's Defence Intelligence Service has announced that the Russian Air Force pilot who will fly a Mig-31 with a Kinzhal missile on board will be awarded $2 million and documents from any NATO country of his choice for his family.

Think about it, you will stop being a murderous war criminal and you get to leave shithole Russia. A win-win.

Russian pilots are not stupid! As soon as he does that, his family disappears into the gulag and he dies months later somewhere in the world.

Something I noticed when I lived in #Singapore was that some things are heavily subsidized to the point of being essentially free, but almost nothing is ever entirely free. MRT and bus fares, for example, are very cheap. An hour-long, cross-island trip across 20+ stops on the MRT metro costs SGD $2.13 today, or about USD $1.50 (even less for students or people with various concession passes). Last time I was there, this practice of charging some tiny amount for something that is basically free is used pretty often. Basic medicine is free under a socialized healthcare system, but everyone is charged a couple of bucks per prescription anyway.

I suspect this is a psychological trick to prevent a #tragedyOfTheCommons. The perceived difference between $0 and $1 is HUGE, because the latter is no longer “free”, and therefore scarce. Charging even a tiny amount probably helps to prevent systemic abuse.

The US Air Force had carried out a virtual test in which an combat drone was controlled by an AI instead of a real person.

The result: the AI decided to kill its superior in the US military!
This is according to a blog entry about an event organised by the Royal Aeronautical Society.

https://www.aerosociety.com/news/highlights-from-the-raes-future-combat-air-space-capabilities-summit/

So much for the concerns about AI being pobulistic and exaggerated.

Here’s a thought experiment: If you had a small group of skilled mobile, desktop, server, and web front-end engineers who have access to time and money, and are eager to MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE USING THEIR SKILLS (and not just spin up yet another exploitive startup) what would YOU have them do?

Be specific.

Assume cost is no object.

It’s time to stop bellyaching about how bad tech is, and start brainstorming about what good it can do.

Please repost for exposure.

EDIT: Let’s add hardware, industrial design, and UX engineers in the mix as well, to round things out.

The advice here is to follow the recommendations from the device maker to clean the equipment of potentially sensitive data and bring it to a factory default state."

I do not know exactly what the device maker will recommend but I doubt that the data cannot be forensically recovered afterwards. That is why it is a requirement in the high security environment to physically destroy all storage media.
My 2¢ in the topic.🙂
