I like too many things to have time for all of them.

If you like TTRPGs, board games, war gaming, tech, coding, FOSS, etc. I think we'll get along!

I've recently been posting approximately a photo a day, tagged with #photography. My usual ethic, typical for artists, is to let my work mostly speak for itself, but I've decided to experiment with adding more commentary and descriptions of my process and intent. It risks sucking the life out of things, but I really appreciate hearing how and why work that I like was created, and maybe others do, too.

@james@dice.camp avatar

@mattblaze I’m always curious to hear how the sausage is made and why!

What font are you using for writing code? I like fonts that do things like convert != into ≠. I ask because I'm setting up a new laptop, which means re-installing all these little things I forgot about.

@ErrataRob I use FiraCode but now I’m going to check out what other replies you get!

@zak The move to Wayland feels like the great but slow migration from Python 2 to 3.

Looking forward to a few years from now when it becomes the standard (at least that was my experience with python)

Apple TV+ was a reasonable deal at $69 per year and a little less so at $7/month. It's not a good deal, IMO, at $10/month and $100/year.

So when our annual subscription runs out next spring, we'll just cancel -- as we've done with almost all of the streaming services -- and renew periodically for a month at a time to catch up on service exclusives we really want to watch.

The streamers seem convinced there's no price elasticity in what they offer.

Prove them wrong.

james,
@james@dice.camp avatar

@dangillmor that’s been my approach with Apple TV+.

I love the sci-fi shows but I simply have too many subscriptions to keep it going for 2 shows that come out with a season a year

Love that #Passkeys are making passwordless logins/login management safer for the average user.

However, I'm apprehensive that there doesn't seem to be an easy way to migrate them to other platforms easily.

james, to random
@james@dice.camp avatar

@ivory not sure where best to bug report, but often I view a thread and see a message separated to the top labelled as “thread” and then below I’ll see the same post which is a bit confusing.

I also believe I see a mix of the replies to the “current” message I’m looking at but also the threaded message.

If it’s confusing I’m sure I can find better examples and email or submit in a better format. Just let me know!

Any highly recommended Halloween Adventures for Mausritter or Into the Odd?

Mothership and Brindlewood Bay have been my go-tos in years past but Mausritter and Into the Odd have caught my eye this autumn!

(Fediverse survey post, asking people to click on a web link to a Mastodon post and say what their app does with it.)

UPDATE: Aaaarrgghhhhhhh! 😱 I had a number of people asking me for clarification of the poll, so I edited option wording, but this caused it to reset the responses to zero. I am so sorry! 🥴

The latest figures before I messed this up were this:

About 75% of people clicking on a link to a Mastodon post saw it displayed a normal post, 25% saw it displayed in a browser window.

james,

@feditips using Ivory and it opens like a normal post

Anyone know if there's a smart lock/dead bolt sensor that DOES NOT allow you unlock remotely but tells you if the deadbolt is unlocked (and ideally able to only lock it)?

@larsmb Thank you! That sounds very promising, I'll have to see if they're available in (or importable to) Canada

I have a new video.

I don't know how exactly I thought these things worked before I looked it up, but it sure wasn't anything close to how they actually work.

@TechConnectify great video just watched it.

I also have no idea how I thought they worked but I don’t think I would have guessed reality either!

james, to mastodon
@james@dice.camp avatar

Some folks on mastodon delete posts after a period, sometimes for privacy sometimes to save server space.

Is there a nice way to download a thread/archive it?

I don’t want to distribute them, I think there’s two cases:

1 I like having an archive of stuff I’ve said so I can look at it years later.
2 people have good advice/essays and I’d like to read them in the future.

#mastodon #selfhosted #scripting #archiving #datahoarder

james,
@james@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon oh yeah I need to try that too I haven’t yet either.

Hmm I assume for my replies it just shows my messages and not someone else’s but I guess I should try and confirm!
Wouldn’t work for random threads I’m not in like when an RPG person goes on an interesting ramble about something in depth

james,
@james@dice.camp avatar

@SJohnRoss @Tim_Eagon that’s a very fair concern.
I think knowing if it’s possible is important for that!

I haven’t done anything like that and tbh probably won’t.

I just realized an advice thread I wanted to think about in more depth later could disappear and wondered what the possibilities were.

I suspect it’s technically possible, it’s more of a question if someone has made it easy already or not.

james,
@james@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon Yeah I presume it’s technically feasible.

Thinking of the privacy side I wonder (hypothetically I don’t have enough interest or time to write something) if any of those deletion settings are publicly visible so you could exclude people.

I was more thinking about the “this is basically just a blog post” type threads from the bird site.

If such a tool existed it would certainly be double edged!

I find myself to the point where I need to setup some kind of dashboard in my homelab. I'm having trouble deciding which way to go with this, though, so I'm asking the community ...

... do you have a strong opinion in this matter? If yes, which dashboard do you prefer and why?

james,
@james@dice.camp avatar

@techaddressed what do you want out of a dashboard?

Organized links?
Stats?
Admin tools?
Do you care if you have to edit configs to update it?

Here are my tips for using #Mastodon and the #Fediverse

  1. Follow anyone you find even remotely interesting (be smart, do a little bit of due diligence before clicking "Follow.") Bonus if they're on a different server than you.

  2. Follow every hashtag that you're interested in.

  3. Use hashtags in your post that you know other people are likely to follow.

  4. Interact, interact, interact!!! Reply, boost, favorite...

  5. Create a pinned introductory post w/ all your interests as hashtags!

james,
@james@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon does the web client indicate a post is in your feed because of a hashtag yet? I saw it was coming.

Following hashtags made a world of difference for me but I needed a client to tell me why I was seeing a post

james,
@james@dice.camp avatar

@Tim_Eagon ah okay, looking forward to that I may use it on desktop more then :)

james,
@james@dice.camp avatar

@Homebrewandhacking @Tim_Eagon haha yeah that was basically my experience. But also not remembering if I’d followed them or not when I was just trying to fill my feed.

Ivory on iOS gives them a nice little chip/pill/bubble so it’s very clear, excited for that to come to web!

Does anyone remember a TTRPG blog post somewhat recently talking about initiative (and I think different approaches to it)?

I was inspired and start drafting a rule system focusing on more interesting/active initiative but can’t find the blog post to credit!

I searched the bird site and my Substack to no avail.
