I am so close to taking the plunge and getting syncthing set up and working across my systems and my NAS.

I honestly can't decide if I want to keep the NAS on Ubuntu Server to save myself headaches, or if I want to distro hop away, and if so, to what distro? And when should I? Before or after setting up syncthing?

Debian seems like the logical choice. Stay within the same branch of the tree. But there's also Rocky Linux, and I have some RedHat familiarity with CentOS in the past.

Yeah that’s fair though I like that there’s no battery degradation with AAs. My main issue was the tolerances were so tight I could barely get the rechargeable IKEA batteries in them.

After installing Awesome for a window manager, I’ve learned just how dependent I am on a mouse or trackpad. Wow - Very eye opening! Trying to learn a few new keyboard shortcuts each day going forward. 🤞🏼

@kevinctofel I used #i3wm for while and it definitely takes some getting used to. I ended up loving it (some coworkers said their brain didn’t organize things that way totally fair)

I can't tell if the Apple VisionPro will be like the iPad, where I didn't see the point until I actually got one, or Google Glass, where I didn't see the point once I actually got one.

@mattblaze I think it depends on the future price point and how good it looks once you have it.

HoloLens (and glass?) had such a tiny FOV I’m curious how the resolution will look on this. But also can’t justify that price

A common Mastodon journalist observation is that things don’t seem to get traction here.

They’re right. Sorta. Boosts and likes aren’t synced across servers, so things look dead.

I’ve had plenty of toots with thousands of boosts and likes.. but if you don’t use my server, cyberplace.social, it looked like they had 4 interactions.

Plot twist: boost and like syncing is coming to Mastodon. It’s on the roadmap.

Anyone got a good recommendation for a standing desk VESA mount, that's not a $250+ Ergotron LX Tall? The Amazon Basics Ergotron white label that I was planning to use is pretty great but needs to go up 6-9" more for proper positioning.

@paul I really like the “Mount-It!” Brand, they have one that’s a poke and then a gas arm that attaches to it.

I was finally able to get the monitor the height I wanted.

@hellomiakoda I feel like “wayland doesn’t work” is the new “sound problems” joke for #Linux.

At some point people will start using and not get why it’s a meme. (Which is how I felt about the sound joke when I started using Ubuntu)

The constant-threats-to-defederate thing is going to kill this place, seriously.

Defederating an instance is an extreme measure and it should only be taken in extreme circumstances.

Finding out I might stop getting posts from people I explicitly follow because they happen to be on an instance being defederated by mine all because a bunch of admins I don't know got in a spat over a user I don't follow is just about the most annoying value proposition imaginable.
