Small #COVID19 update:

As predicted a month ago, COVID infections are starting to rise in the US. The rise is not great (yet) in most of the nation. (For instance, here in my home state of Wisconsin, we remain near our 12-month lows.) But, this is not the case everywhere--in fact, there are places with very high levels of infections based on wastewater metrics. (1/6)

Hawaii is nearing a two-year peak that has exploded eightfold in just six weeks. While California has seen an almost 3x rise in COVID statewide, parts of the Bay Area are approaching COVID levels seen during the last holiday surge. I donโ€™t know whether anyone else does this, but with so much I read about what is happening right now, like this on and heatstroke measures, I canโ€™t help imagining it both as a document read by later historians (โ€œhow it all unfoldedโ€) and as a report from the future - ie, this is what I thought would start happening in the future, if we donโ€™t do anything to prevent it.

Yall as someone who is striking and generally existing on a campus that is crawling with roughly one security guard per picketer from no fewer than 5 private security companies, if they even slightly change the laws so that private security get some form of qualified immunity or ability to use any amount of force we are totally fucked.

    Anti-camping ordinances and sweeps are pushing unhoused people into increasingly marginal spaces, exposed to extreme weather.

    Officials in cities like Ontario, #California, can be hostile, by, for example, removing park gazebos.

    But CA is prone to cycles of drought and heavy rainfall. And when the rain hits, like it did in Nov. 2022, it can be fatal to people living around culverts and drainage.

    Matt Fowle, a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pennsylvania who tracks deaths among unhoused people in the U.S., found a 141% increase in mortality from environmental causes across 22 localities between 2011 and 2020.
