When you help people in a half-assed way, you don’t really want to help them. You just want to say you did.

@ikuo1000@mas.to avatar

@StillIRise1963 Yeeeeessss!!! I say this to my kids - and my husband! - all the time. If you do something half-assed and grumbling, you don't get credit for doing it. I'd rather you NOT do it at all than spoil / ruin whatever it is.

Here's the thing. I'm perfectly willing to spend time w/ people outdoors, or masked indoors, or unmasked indoors w/ rapid testing, open windows, air purifiers.

But if the other person isn't covid-aware, then I don't actually ENJOY hearing about or seeing photos of their various unmasked exploits that include people I know who are medically vulnerable (and who don't even take covid precautions themselves).

It's depressing instead of uplifting & makes me prefer being a hermit.

Hey covid-cautious friends, I'm looking for recommendations for a HEPA air purifier.

I did all the research needed to purchase large ones for my home, but now I'm looking to buy a smaller medium-sized one for my oldest to take to college for use in a dorm room.

Must be HEPA and ideally relatively quiet and not take up too much space.

There's an overwhelming number of brands out there now, some claiming "HEPA-grade" but not really. Would love some starting points. Thanks!

😷 I have a request for the fediverse

A person asked if I knew of anyone here who could provide covid information that is "regular easily digestable media to keep me up to date on the covid topic".

This person does not want research papers instead something that a layperson might understand is preferable.

Could anyone please help out?
The account making the request is
@CIMB4

Thanks everyone.😀

@Snowshadow @CIMB4 How about the People's CDC? Sadly their Mastodon account @PeoplesCDC is no longer active, but their website is up-to-date and you can sign up for weekly newsletters. They tend to present high-level information with links to more info.

I've long known about the and allyship of activists such as James and Grace Lee Boggs, and Malcom X and Yuri Kochiyama.

But I didn't know - until today! - that Black and Asian American solidarity could have started with Frederick Douglass's support of Chinese immigrants in the 1800s!

This from ASIAN AMERICAN HISTORIES OF THE UNITED STATES by Catherine Ceniza Choy. It's a very approachable survey of issues and history, not a dense academic tome.

We assume my husband got JN.1, the most prevalent variant right now. Here's how his infection went:

  • Day 0 = 1st day of symptoms; "tickle" in throat, tired; rapid test negative for 3 days

  • Trouble sleeping, took NyQuil just to sleep

  • Day 3: rapid test positive; sore throat already gone, new mild cough & congestion

  • Felt better every day, still positive

  • Days 6-8: mostly asymptomatic (except for trouble sleeping), still positive

  • Day 9: rapid test negative

Be honest - Do you think that social media has personally made you a bit more unhinged?

ikuo1000, (edited )
@ikuo1000@mas.to avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi Yes, totally. Before social media, I didn't consider myself easily outraged. But social media exposed me to so many things that make me so mad! I get mad at both situations that exist in the world & also the way the masses respond to them (not appropriately, in my view). So yep, I feel unhinged & feel most calm when I'm in my offline hermit bubble.

Note: This is for Twitter & FB, I do NOT feel unhinged on Mastodon!! In fact, Mastodon calms me because I have "my people" here!

Glad to see mainstream media acknowledging that and talking about the challenges of avoiding it when the government isn't helping.

As the most covid-cautious person that other people know, maybe an article like this can show people that I'm not the only one, there are others out there like me.

Anyway, always happy to see @luckytran quoted, and also Ziyad Al-Aly and Akiko Iwasaki (wish they were on Mastodon).

Omg. Sitting in my kid's doctor's waiting room and my husband texts me this!!! 😭

He rapid tested negative on Days 0 and 2 of symptoms but tested positive today, Day 3.

He isolated AS SOON as he felt his first symptom. We've had air purifiers running, windows open, and masks when I pop in to get something from the room - which I WON'T do now that we know he has covid!!!

1/

ikuo1000,
@ikuo1000@mas.to avatar

His first symptom was MINOR sore throat, which was gone in 1 day. He continued to isolate because he had trouble sleeping and MINOR congestion. That's it. No fever. No cough. But YES, it's covid.

I'M SO MAD AT THE STUPID CDC WHOSE GUIDANCE WOULD HAVE HIM BACK AT WORK TEACHING CLASSES!!!!! 😠

2/

ikuo1000,
@ikuo1000@mas.to avatar

He ALWAYS masks at work but he's a teacher and LITERALLY the ONLY staff member who consistently masks. Masks DO work but ONE-WAY MASKING is NOT good enough, especially in CROWDED unmasked classrooms with insufficient ventilation!!!!!!!

I'M SO MAD AT PUBLIC HEALTH FOR NOT ENFORCING CLEAN INDOOR AIR STANDARDS AND MASKING IN THE ABSENCE OF CLEAN INDOOR AIR!!!!! 😠

3/ will finish my rage and rant later, appointment over, driving home...

ikuo1000,
@ikuo1000@mas.to avatar

Home now, kids are fed, back to raging & ranting. 😡

We diligently tested on Day 0 (1st day of symptoms) & REPEATED testing EVEN THOUGH symptoms improved. He didn't test positive until Day 3, the FOURTH day since symptom onset & the only remaining symptom being mild congestion.

I'M SO MAD AT EVERYONE WHO CLAIMS THEIR ILLNESS IS "NOTCOVID™️" WITHOUT TESTING OR WITH ONLY 1 NEGATIVE TEST!!!! DON'T EVEN TRY TO SAY IT'S "NOTCOVID™️" UNLESS YOU'VE TESTED MULTIPLE TIME FOR AT LEAST 5 DAYS!!!! 😠

4/

ikuo1000,
@ikuo1000@mas.to avatar

My husband will stay home sick but won't say it's covid because we fear his employer will demand he come in based on stupid CDC guidelines. 😠

But UNLIKE THE HEARTLESS MASSES, we DON'T WANT to infect others, so he'll continue to isolate.

Plus, this is his 2nd infection - the 1st was exactly the same scenario, caught at crowded, poorly ventilated school while one-way masking - and I want him RESTING to reduce risk of future problems!!!!!

I AM JUST SO FUCKING MAD AT THE WORLD.

5/

ikuo1000,
@ikuo1000@mas.to avatar

@RebelGeek99 Thanks. ❤ Honestly, it helps just to know that some people commiserate with us, since the vast majority of people at best shrug their shoulders at covid and at worst roll their eyes at me and accuse me of overreacting.

ikuo1000,
@ikuo1000@mas.to avatar

Oh, I'm not done!!!!

Just remembered that PCR tests now cost over $100 which means we won't bother getting a PCR confirmation.

I AM SO MAD THAT ONLY PCR TESTS ARE COUNTED IN OFFICIAL STATE NUMBERS WHICH MEANS OFFICIAL STATE REPORTS ARE MASSIVE UNDERCOUNTS AND YET PUBLIC OFFICIALS AND MEDIA POINT TO THOSE FALSE NUMBERS AS "PROOF" THAT COVID PREVALENCE IS LOW, WHICH IT IS NOT!!!! 😠

The best we can do is report to:

@ikuo1000@mas.to avatar

@thepoliticalcat Omg I hope he wasn't contagious before he tested positive!! 🤦🏻‍♀️ Luckily he did isolate immediately upon feeling symptoms so hopefully that was enough! 🤞

Nope, stupid school won't allow air purifiers, they don't even want windows open because they CLAIM with ZERO evidence that the "slow displacement" ventilation system can ONLY work properly with windows closed and no fans in the room. Mind you, they've never even provided evidence of sufficient ventilation in the first place. 😠

Seeing and hearing a lot about today being the 4th anniversary of the official start of the covid pandemic and am feeling really triggered by everyone talking about covid in the past tense and completely ignoring long covid and the damage covid does to organs and the immune system. 😠

😭😭😭

ikuo1000,

@BlackAzizAnansi Yes, same. Except, actually, it turns out, hermitude really agrees with me. 🤷🏻‍♀️ What I wish, though, is that my kids could live non-pandemic lives. 😪 I couldn't care less if I never eat in a restaurant again myself, but I want my kids to enjoy a socially fulfilling young adulthood without worrying about all the potential damage of covid infections.

ikuo1000, to climate
@ikuo1000@mas.to avatar

I'm reading #TheClimateBook by Greta Thunberg and learning a LOT!

I'm struck by the parallels between the #ClimateCrisis & the #pandemic in terms of how, in both cases, addressing the problem requires people to completely change norms & behaviors.

A couple times, the book (published in 2022 & so written even earlier) holds up the covid pandemic as an example of how "in times of crisis... our societies can quickly change our behaviors and practices, for example wearing a mask..." (p. 367)

1/

ikuo1000,
@ikuo1000@mas.to avatar

One essay in the book cites sociologist Damon Centola, whose research suggests that "the critical tipping point for changing everyone's behaviour is a committed minority of 25 per cent... if 25 per cent of the population visibly change their practices, norms and behaviours," then others will follow suit. (p. 367)

3/

ikuo1000,
@ikuo1000@mas.to avatar

Sadly, we now know that when left to their own devices, far less than 25% of people will voluntarily do something for the greater good, even when it's as simple as wearing a mask, which is not nearly as significant a change in lifestyle as giving up driving, flying, or beef.

And EVEN if you can get 25% on board initially, how do we make the change stick, so people understand that it's a PERMANENT change? How do we get them to accept a new normal & leave the old normal behind?

4/

ikuo1000,
@ikuo1000@mas.to avatar

What we've learned is that in order to achieve any real, lasting progress in addressing the , we can't rely on people voluntarily getting on board with lifestyle changes.

We know that mandates work. If you require masking & especially if you provide masks for free, most people will follow the rules.

So, we need to legislate changes to move people along. Maybe we ban gas-guzzling SUVs, or do away with frequent flyer programs so that flying isn't incentivized.

5/

ikuo1000,
@ikuo1000@mas.to avatar

Other essays in the book point out that "household action is a crucial predicate for broader action" (p. 283) and "the extent to which people make environmentally friendly choices is affected by their assessment of what others are doing." (p. 328)

Also, our actions help to "exert pressure on decision-makers to enact more ambitious policy responses." (p. 330)

6/

ikuo1000,
@ikuo1000@mas.to avatar

So, yes, just like with the pandemic, in dealing with the climate, we do what we can in our own lives, educate others and hope they will follow suit, and continue to advocate for better policies.

We just reeeeeally need the policies to happen sooner rather than later. 😬
