#Portland 😞 #Vision60or70something "third [sic] consecutive year of failure for #VisionZero, an ambitious and expensive 2016 policy that included a goal of eliminating traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2025... Officials had hoped that an increased police presence would be the missing ingredient to reduce fatal crashes." wtf who thought cops were going to help our #infrastructure design problems that we never adopted REAL policy requiring #trafficEngineers to fix?

"Just today I biked on the new protected bike lanes on SW Broadway and one block was so full of leaves and water that I had to leave the lane and merge into a shared lane... Dirty bike lanes have been a perennial problem and the #Portland transportation bureau has yet to offer a strategy or plan to tackle it." #PBOT #pdxBikes 2021, and this year too.

It's insane the way you have to fall asleep reading the absolute worst fucking news from all over the world about apocalyptic scenarios playing out and then just get up the next day and go to work like "so anyway how are we doing on our quarterly goals?"

As a follow-up to the wildly terrible idea to tear out a bike lane on SW Broadway by #Portland 's PBOT (but probably by Comm. Mapps), watch this straight 🔥 video by @nerd4cities who used to be a #PDX city planner. I love all of this. (Also much appreciation to #BikePortland who broke the story originally, but for inexplicable reasons is still on bird Twix & not here) #BikeTooter #urbanism #urbanplanning

….and now they’ve officially scrapped the whole terrible idea 😁 I wonder if @nerd4cities video making fun of them had anything to do with it?! I hope so!

More garbage from #Portland City Hall, this time they are actually reversing progress on a bike lane in downtown #PDX, presumably because business owners don't like it. I don't like traffic fatalities more, does that count for anything? #BikeTooter

@Karstan meanwhile WWeek just reported that more people left OR in 2022 than moved here for the first time since the '80s. On the list of top problems facing the city, "bikes riding in front of hotels makes millionaires sad" doesn't crack the top 50, & it's shameful that this is a "problem" that they're trying to "solve".

It's both a challenging & an exciting time to be living in #Portland. I have been around long enough to watch the motto "The City That Works" erode from reality to a sad joke, but I'm jazzed that we chose to totally overhaul our local government. This is what healthy societies do when stuff is broken - they try something to fix it. Good reading from WWeek:

A banger from Willamette Week about the bleak commercial real estate outlook in #portland. It just seems like we've reached peak Idiocracy if we've got all these buildings with all this unused space at a time when we also have more homelessness & a bigger #housingcrisis than ever before, so can we just... put people... in those buildings? We can do hard things!

@enobacon @bikeportland it is really disheartening that they & so many other good urbanist voices in Portland are still there. I think inertia is real & change is hard, but if we can do it, they can too
