As an admin of a small Fediverse server, I might as well talk about my approach to federation.

Generally, I defederate servers that I observe to engage in illegal or harassing behaviour. And I say observe because I don’t blindly trust blocklists. Sometimes a server may wind up on a blocklist, address the problem that caused it to be on that blocklist, and yet still remain on that blocklist.

I generally don’t receive terrible content on my server because I am the most active user here, I follow a small amount of people, and I only follow folks who’ve built a relationship of trust with me.

That said, I can’t predict when someone will do something illegal. Hence why I don’t allow anyone to view this server’s remote profiles and timelines unless you’re logged in. Since only two people, including me, have accounts on atomicpoet.org, remote profiles and timelines have been hidden from public view.

If someone engages in untoward behaviour, my policy is as follows:

  1. Alert the offender, ask them to change their ways
  2. If that doesn’t work, alert the server admin, and see if this results in change
  3. If that doesn’t work, defederate

Funny enough, when I reach step 2, the admin often defederates me before I defederate them. This saves me work.

Finally, I don’t mention why I defederate a server. I don’t frankly need a reason to defederate. My reasons are my reasons.

@TheJen it’s great that you can test at home now. I had no option but to go to a sleep clinic, be hooked up to what seemed like thousands of sensor leads glued to my head, sleep on the most uncomfortable bed I’ve laid in, and get almost no sleep. I’ve been on CPAP therapy ever since.

@TheJen I totally agree, my Brother did his at home a few years ago and the results were better and they had to improve the sensors to fit the new equipment, science progresses!

Anyone got a contact in Cloudflare, ideally the abuse or Ops team?

Someone has pointed a Cloudflare-Traffic-Manager at one of our IPs.

But their abuse form won't allow you to mention Cloudflare or just traffic going to an IP (there is not Host name in the requests, just the IP).

The traffic is blocked, but just Fscking annoying and it paged me and woke me up, and now I'm grumpy.
