Thanks to everyone who followed me over to the new server and to all new people. For the new people: I post mainly about matters relevant to communities of color, particularly Black folks. I post about abolition, what it is and why it’s needed. I post on African music and cultural events in the DC/NY corridor. I’m a lawyer and retired law prof. I do pay attention to notable trials. I don’t do free lifting for white folks who can look up things on the internet.

I gotta say.. it’s fucking scary to see the far right rise so fast in so many countries with such extremes

We have had 2 world wars with so many deaths that also started with such ‘ideas’ and ‘thoughts’, we cannot and may not let that happen ever again

Unfortunately I don’t have the answers but I really much wish we could find some common ground and cool down things before it gets even further out of hand

Reuters review of TX property records shows SpaceX & its contractors can be far slower to pay builders, suppliers than they are to break ground. Unpaid bills, finger-pting among contractors have led many construction-industry businesses to file liens against SpaceX properties in efforts to get compensated.

I don't understand CWing political posts. And that doesn't mean you need to @ me explaining why. I know THEIR reasons, I just disagree with them and won't do it.

I respect CWs for other things, but not politics. Politics is news and people need to be aware of what's happening. It's not gory or violent, it's politics.

@GottaLaff Well they can't say you didn't cover everything! 😆 I commend you and your family for being willing to step outside of the box and make a new adventure for the next stages of your life. We can all create the world we want to live in and that's what you're doing. You'll keep the good memories and make some new good ones, and to hell with that bad memories. I, for one cannot wait to hear about the new adventures and misadventures from the other side of the border.

@GottaLaff Yes...but sometimes what the horrible people do is merely immoral and not illegal. Unfortunately society is supposed to put a check on that...but as you know we are a big FAIL in that department. But lying to investors...yeah that's something law can handle...cheating rich people out of their money is still a no-no at the moment.

@GottaLaff Funny thing though, when I was teaching White Collar Crime and my students read case after case where defendants' convictions were reversed, my students would ask "How is this not a crime?!" And the answer was in the US not everyone really believes cheating to make money is illegal rather than immoral. Finding the point where that line is crossed seems to be hard when making money is the end goal.

@GottaLaff 😆 I'm feeling professorial today! Depends on who the "us" is in 'work for us.' I think lay people believe the law was made to help us, meaning them. Historically though it was made to protect the wealth of the church and then the king and then the assets of the wealthy. The protection for regular people does not now nor has it ever had a high priority. Since we aren't technically serfs anymore, folks have forgotten that.

Yesterday @majorlinux made an observation after years of raising money for charities through gaming: "The fact that charities exist because Capitalists horde all the wealth leaving the working class to pick up the slack by begging one another to donate while simultaneously providing the Capitalists to make themselves look good isn't great." But as groups start trying to rethink how to create safety, the question always comes up as to how to fund the work. In the US the thinking is you have to create a 501(c)(3) in order to raise money and then apply for grant funding. But capitalists create foundations (the source of grant funding) to shield their wealth from taxation. 2/ 8

The question becomes if a grassroots group is really trying to radically change how their communities will be treated, will foundations be willing to fund such ideas? 3/8

A collection of grassroots organizers wrote about how foundations co-opt and otherwise use their grants as a way to restrict the real work grassroots organizations do. The organizational leaders discussed how they ended up wasting time and resources “professionalizing” their work as demanded by the foundations. 4/8

The “professionalization” push of the corporate foundations has created a category of nonprofit workers who are “professional managers.” Their whole effort revolves around keeping a high paying CEO or ED job in the sector as opposed to actually focusing on delivering services. I’ve seen good programs destroyed by nonprofit professionals EDs. 5/8

People are often unaware that survivors of domestic violence often wind up in prisons when their audacity to survive is criminalized by the criminal legal system. There's a new legislative effort under way in California to bring them some sentencing relief.
