Today's achievement with Unreal Engine - worked a little on water and underwater effects. Material for post-processing underwater visual and material for caustics as Decal. It's still not perfect for gameplay my goal was more educational

I will soon change my job to become an independant #Unity teacher and I will open a YouTube channel + insta + tiktok + twitch to show some #unity3d content like tutorials.
Do you think I also should open a Twitter account ?

#gamedev #realtime #dev

feyter,
@feyter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@Fangh I think with all that commercially driven platforms it doesn't really matter if you will be on Twitter or not.

I personally don't like most of the platforms you just plan to jump on (especially TikTok) and I always prefer content to be seen in the itself. For me the experience in e.g. is much better, but it's definitely missing content for now.

But I understand that you need to reach as many people as possible and currently those platforms are most popular.

feyter,
@feyter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@metin no offense to you (of course) but I think the article is part of the problem.

  1. The headline is completely different from the findings of the study which says "mostly no effect at all"

  2. The article says without Social Media the people where less likely to believe false information. But This numbers are not put into perspective. Was it 50% less or 0.1%?

  3. No analysis on how the setup was actually constructed and data was gathered.

(1/2)

feyter,
@feyter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@metin So all that remains is a article constructed to already fit into an already established world view of "social media is bad" without any real possibility for the reader to put this results in perspective and think about it on a deeper level.

This behavior is what causes problems in the first place. Not social media.

(2/2)

feyter,
@feyter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@rticks @metin that sounds like an easy to make statement but I don't really understand what that should mean.

I don't think there is only one-fits-all treatment for all different kinds of addictions.

At which point would "can't control" be considered to be the case and has believing false information actually anything to do with not being able to control consumption? So for me all that is not clear that's why at this point I would not support a general saying like that.

"If you make your own engine you'll never ship a game"

I'm here to tell you this is BS. Kitsune Tails uses a custom engine built on a custom framework all made from the ground up by yours truly. Neither of these were even remotely the bottleneck for development duration. Turns out that the thing that takes the most time when you're developing a game is all the stuff that is hyper specific to that game and can't be generalized anyway

Not to mention all the, you know, actual content that sits on top of the engine. I can write a json parser and serializer from the ground up in a day or two, but all the cutscenes I had to script for KT took many weeks

Then there's the fact that if I'd used an out of the box physics solution for Kitsune Tails I'm fairly certain I'd never have been able to nail the game feel it has, which is the most core thing to the whole experience

You don't have to make an engine but quit pretending doing it is the hard part of making a game. It fucking ain't

feyter,
@feyter@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@eniko "I can write a json parser and serializer from the ground up in a day or two"... I'm gonna be honest with you. I probably wouldn't be able to do so.

If you know about how all this stuff should work... Yes you can do it. But not all game devs are so passionate about all this and actually "just want to do the game dev stuff"

So sure everyone can write one own engine. But many (at least I) would first spend days or weeks on researching and concept design for every single sub task...
