@europlus@europlus.zone

I collect Apple ][ europluses and host WOzFest, single day gatherings of Apple ][ enthusiasts, five times a year.

I run the Applesauce Fluxes image bot here – it's amazing how we can find beauty in just about anything.

I am on the spectrum and learning how to manage my life better than I did when I didn't know I was.

I lean heavily left/progressive.

I love my past Bichoodles (Poochons) – Poppy, Lily (RIP) and Daisy (RIP) 💗

I wish people were more like dogs – or I just wish there were more dogs.

I’m blocking VCF Actual (@admin) as they flippantly belittle the concept of art being made by human creators, and they choose to use ripped off art via AI regurgitators. If you support creators, I ask you to consider also blocking them.

europlus,

Platforming a highly unsavoury member of the retro community with a session last year I was already uncomfortable with, but this just really nails their thesis to the church doors in my eyes. Please don’t support them, boost them, attend them.

europlus,

The retro scene is chock full of creators, even low key ones like me. I’d hate to think of any of my stuff going through the AI grist mill and being used in this way, and we should all similarly be upset with artists’ creativity being devalued not only by the AI companies, but by users like VCF Actual who question what art itself is. Gah, so pissed!

A small manufacturing defect destroys your computer's main storage, and it's nonrecoverable. All data lost.

Do you have backups so that you can restore what you cannot do without, and quickly? Have you checked those backups are happening? do you have multiple backups? have you checked they're restorable?

europlus,

@NanoRaptor yes, I’ve checked those backups…and some of the checks were even planned!

Such a mystery why stuff like this keeps happening, a profound enigma and veritable conundrum, a riddle for the ages

europlus,

@thomasfuchs I hear there is some level of debate across the scientific spectrum on potential causes. Best to wait till there’s an undeniable consensus and both sides’ positions are fully worked through and we consider the broad economic impact of changing things if it’s not just natural variation. After all, there’s no point rushing things, is there?</s>

Our eldest daughter is starting elementary school in #Japan in April and we have to submit bank details for a direct debit for school fees

The debit system used is some local thing only supported by the local banks, and the application is done on paper.

There's a pre-filled out section for how the school is going to submit the debits with the options for

  • Paper ledger
  • Floppy Disk
  • Magneto-optical
  • DVD
  • Data transmission

I'm sad to say my daughters school did not choose floppy disk 😢

europlus,

@Random_Seed @kalleboo my work (book publisher) many years ago got a Sony 3½" 230MB drive as part of an upgrade Quadra 840AV system.

I absolutely fell in love with MOs (and I still have the included disk eject tool — no more janky straightened paper clips for this high roller!).

If I had a SCSI-capable system I’d maybe buy a drive and some disks for old time’s sake.

europlus,

@Random_Seed @kalleboo that’s the one!

Zara, who did nothing wrong, has been released from the cone of shame. She had to wear it extra long after being spayed because she had had so many C-section surgeries in her pre-rescue life, which left an excess of scar tissue and necessitated medical staples to ensure the sutures held long enough to heal.

What radicalized you?

europlus,

@a2_4am thank you for looking after her so well – she’s very lucky to have you.

I spent some time this evening working on my PiDP-11. The physical build is almost done now! What's left: get a proper power supply, make the keyswitch do a hard shutdown, install a second RS-232 port, install an ethernet jack, install wireless ethernet.

Today I managed, at long last, to get a real VT320 terminal hooked up to the emulated PDP-11 (and not thr underlying Linux host)!

A close up of the logon prompt on the VT320. The text displays a line confirming connection to the simulated PDP-11, followed by a BSD.211 login prompt. The host name is "greybeard".
A close up of a BSD 2.11 UNIX session on an amber monochrome VT330 terminal. You can see a failed login attempt, a good login attempt, the output from an ls command.

Google is shutting off password access to mail, calendars, and contacts, forcing OAuth2 to authenticate.

Anything with IMAP, SMTP, POP, CalDAV, or CardDAV using basic auth will fail.

A site with ranked feed has somehow decided that I want to see viral UX/designer content.

In every viral UX comparison I've seen so far, the "good" version looks more "modern" but is also less legible / usable. E.g., below, the contrast is lower and legibility is sacrificed for cleanness.

When designers have free reign to do things how they want, the result is often quite unusable: https://twitter.com/danluu/status/1211782987664113664, https://twitter.com/danluu/status/919423128895442944, etc.

Comparison where "good" version is low contrast and and critical information is hard to read.

europlus,

@danluu same story at Apple? Those active vs inactive windows in Sonoma are driving me fucking nuts!
