@futurebird That's always a valid question!
Here's weird trivia about the Croatian language. For naming months, all Slavic languages use either Latin-based names (so, similar to English) or Slavic names, based on what's happening in nature and work.

Croatian is one of those that formally use Slavic names, EXCEPT in informal speech - we NEVER call months by their names! We'll always use the ordinal number of the month - e.g. "3rd month" or just short "3rd". 😅
And nobody knows why.

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@NotThe @futurebird @purplepadma 😁
What's even funnier - Croatian is the only Slavic language that does that! I'm not sure if it's unique on a global scale, but on the Slavic it definitely is. 😅

I have been in a typography class for 3 months. It's more intense than I thought it would be (I thought it was going to be 'how to pick typefaces' but it's 'how to design typefaces).

I stuck with it because I am interested in learning something I don't know anything about. Today I got my grade: C+.

My perfectionist self says, 'why C+?'

My kinder, compassionate self (who is thrilled that I got to do something I never thought I would), says, "yay! you designed a typeface!!"

#Typography #Life

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@skinnylatte No C++? 😅
(okay okay, I'll see myself out)

It took me a few seconds to understand what was going on, at first I thought you wrote a C++ program that created a typeface. 😅

More angles than a Huracan. I don’t not like it, but something just feels off.

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@ukuku The wheels are too small, rear lights are too high, both making the proportions feel weird.
Or is it just a too tall car in general, and small wheels and high rear light just a consequence. 🤔

briannawu, to random

Finally upgrading the lights in my 1986 Porsche 911. The originals are nearly useless for night driving.

This is just a test fit. Do I need to take these to a paint shop and get someone to paint the black rims with guards red single stage? Or is black okay?

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@briannawu Red, to match the '80s look of the car, no dilemma.

When people say that they don't want Bluesky people over here - I hate to break it to you, but a lot of Bluesky people are also Mastodon people. Getting harder to tell the timelines apart, fr.

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@misc I've seen a lot of hate towards "those Mastodon weirdos" on Bluesky, even from some users I know are active here, as well. Not to count people there saying Mastodon isn't viable because it's "too complex" to use - there's more than one app!

Hey friends, here's a wild one. Just developed two rolls of Kodak Tri-X 400 in the same tank. Both fresh, unexpired rolls. Here's what the tail ends of both look like. My best guess is that the roll on the right went through an airport scanner and got fogged. A massive difference that results in dense, grainy negatives.

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@gregpak Oh wow, that's quite a difference!
I have no idea what could cause that, sorry, but the airport scanner fogging would be my guess, as well.

elkarrde, to BelieveInFilm
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

Well, shit. Today I learned there's a Bulb mode on Olympus OM-10 camera even without the manual adapter.
After shooting an entire roll of Lomochrome Turquoise and wondering why the heck is the camera sounding so weird. 😭

poll: have you lost work because of a git problem in the last year or two? (it counts even if it was "your fault" :))

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@b0rk I've lost code because git, but it was always my fault - either not knowing what I was doing then, or forcing it to do stuff it warned me about, and me not listening.
I found it easier to use git almost exclusively in the console - except for merging.

I've seen an Instagram reel where a film photographer bragged about moving back to the 21st century, where "taking photos is free", with a digital Hasselblad camera.
Am I just too poor to understand how does buying a $8000 camera makes you take photos for free? 🤔

(I get the idea, you don't need to buy film, but for eight grand you get quite a lot of film, even today)

#believeinfilm

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@anymouse_404 Most likely, yeah!
I'm not bashing the guy's ability to sink a few grand into a new gear, I'm happy at least someone can; I'm just not a fan of the dismissive tone. 🤷‍♂️

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@Lightfighter I'm no better - my Panasonic GX7 will be a decade old this summer, and that's my newest digital camera! 😂

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@anymouse_404 @Lightfighter I love that camera so much that I plan to buy another one, once the current one finally dies. 😅

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@Lightfighter @anymouse_404 I've never used that camera, but from what I've read and heard, it's a perfectly fine camera.
The lens selection is still significantly better than for the current Canon's R-series APS-C cameras.

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@anymouse_404 Yeah, GX7 doesn't support 4K recording, either.
Regarding object tracking and eye focusing, I've found out it depends on the lens, some lenses simply aren't as fast as others - I had focusing issues with both versions of the Panasonic 20mm F1.7 lens, and no issues at all with the Leica 25mm F1.4 lens.

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@tmcfarlane Sure - if it's in their favour, but if it isn't then it's the biggest available aperture. Ya know, why would you want a medium format sensor if you don't have an 85mm ƒ/1.2 or 105mm ƒ/1.4 lens!?
(I've read that actual argument somewhere on the 'net)

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@anymouse_404 Hahaha, well, that's a Manual mode, isn't it? 😅

My previous experience is with Pentax DSLRs, where Manual mode is exactly the same - no auto-ISO there. But Pentax has TAv mode - basically an M mode with auto-ISO. At least, ISO selection on GX7 is easy to access.

The folks at @globalwitness have done some amazing (and shocking!) analysis of content moderation on large platforms:

All those they looked at "except #Facebook and #Instagram, lack human content moderators in some of the EU languages."

And "neither #X nor #Snapchat have a single content moderator who can speak Estonian, Greek, Hungarian, Irish, Lithuanian, Maltese, Slovak, Slovenian", and X also has "no moderators for Czech, Danish, Finnish, Romanian, or Swedish." 💥

@ilumium @globalwitness I'm quite surprised Croatian is better covered (albeit only slightly!) than Czech, Slovakian, Hungarian and Greek!

"Web Development Is Getting Too Complex, And It May Be Our Fault"

https://www.smashingmagazine.com/2024/02/web-development-getting-too-complex/

"Are , , and a touch of enough to build your website or web application? If so, then stick with those. What I am afraid of is adding complexity for complexity’s sake and inadvertently raising the barrier to entry for those coming into web development."

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@tedel @davidbisset Increased complexity also reduces the speed - there's more stuff to transfer through the tubes, there's more stuff to interpret and run. More memory gets used, and more CPU is needed even for the basics.

Was all that needed just so agencies could charge more (and developers feel better) because HTML, CSS and design weren't considered serious enough? 🤔

People who design APIs. I am begging you. It doesn't matter how "simple" or "intuitive" or "elegant" your API is. You need to include sample code.

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@mcc Back in my glory days, while I was developing a JS library for one fintech startup, I had The best docs ever - not only there was at least one example for every method, but there was also a "Run now" button and examples on JSfiddle.
Too bad I never saved the repo.

I got fed up with stupid questions, I wrote the docs and all those examples so I could just send a link to an example that answers the question. Any question. 😁
